I was unable to catch the game tonight. Can I get the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly?

RT @BroadStHockey: Somebody asked Bryz if it's tough when you don't know the other team. "No, the puck is still round."

RT @davegisaac: Pure gold from the #Flyers room tonight. Hyka: "It’s my typical celebration of my goals." Bryz on playing first game: "It’s like Formula 1"

Hyka and Read looked good.

http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/130322023.html

Quote:
Hyka, a 5-10, 158-pound rookie free-agent winger, scored his first NHL goal and drew a penalty on his very next shift in Wednesday night's 4-2 preseason loss to the Maple Leafs at the Wells Fargo Center.

The Flyers slogged for most of the game, except for a brief spell when Jody Shelley woke everybody up with an entertaining fight with Toronto's Jay Rosehill. Shelley lost the bout, sustaining a cut above his right eye as Rosehill was coming to the aid of a teammate whom Shelley had smeared into the boards.

But the Flyers killed off Shelley's boarding major and punctuated it when Matt Read found Hyka, who served the penalty, coming out of the box for a breakaway goal. Don't tell these guys the preseason is meaningless, especially after Claude Giroux made sure to get the puck from referee Kelly Sutherland so Hyka would have a souvenir.
Shelley was tossed for boarding and then had a lengthy fight.

Quote:
It didn't take Jody Shelley long to notch his first dance of the 2011-2012 campaign, as he dropped the gloves with Jay Rosehill of the Toronto Maple Leafs in his first preseason game. The two had come together earlier in the game without further incident, after Shelley clearly boarded Darryl Boyce, Rosehill rightfully wanted to get nasty. Hard not to be entertained by this one, which lasted a full minute:

I think the sample size is large enough to conclusively rule that the Bryz signing is a bust.

Bernie Parent gave up seven goals in 22 minutes in his first preseason game after being reacquired.

Hyka looks like a possible gem
Gus should be the 6th d man
Briz looks calm in the goal, the goals scored not withstanding
Nodl can kill penalties

And things I think
Schenn will take a lot of big face offs in his career
I'd really like to see if the Flyers could get Jerry D'Amigo. I think he could be a nice banger with hands
Marshall? Not an NHLer at this point
Thank you for that.

Hi friends :3

for your inquiry about Jerry D'Amigo - it would take next to nothing to get him. Like really..next to nothing. He had a stellar year as an overager in the OHL after a bad year in the AHL. He's definitely a guy to watch, could come out as a 2nd liner on some NHL teams in the future, he's got the raw skill.

Thanks for the links, MSE. I had thought, from the descriptions here, that Shelley got pounded, but he gave as good as he got after Rosehill's initial flurry. He's still an anvil in this lineup and hopefully his "How to Get Suspended" clinic does not go unnoted by Holmgren and Laviolette.

Sorry, this is wrong. He was not an overager last year. He was still junior eligible as a 91 birthdate. Because he had turned pro directly from RPI, he was able, unlike major junior players, to go directly to the AHL. He played the first part of the season with the AHL Marlies, but was not getting enough quality ice team to advance his development. Accordingly, the Leafs sent him to Kitchener of the OHL where he had quite a successful 21 game stint and played very well in a 7 game playoff series.

He is probably not a very top tier prospect in the Leafs system, but the Blue and White certainly would not give him away easily. My guess is that he could be obtained as part of a package but there would have to be real value going the other way.

As someone who watched him in college (I go to RPI), I would LOVE to have him on the Flyers. Dont know how he did this year, but at RPI he was dominate as a freshman.

Shelley's actions tonight shows that he should not be on this team and he lost the fight to go with the stupid hit on the leaf player waiver wire coming for him...........

losing fights means almost nothing when determining a roster spot, see: Cote, Riley.

His actions weren't smart, and I'm sure it'll cost him some games...but I'd be shocked if he didn't make this roster. They love his leadership in the locker room.

Post-game comments regarding the boarding hit:

Quote:
Boyce showed his toughness by returning to the game in the third period after taking one hellacious shot.

"I was going in for the puck and just sort of got hit from behind there," Boyce said. "It was not a clean hit for sure. "

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said he would have to go back and look at the hit on tape before making a judgment. He did stick up for Shelley’s character.

"I know the league is looking at incidents, so the fact that there was a call and a game misconduct, I’m sure it will get looked at," Laviolette said. "Hopefully nothing happens. he’s a fairly honest player."

Rosehill was level-headed in his criticism of Shelley.

"You know, I don’t know him as being a dirty player," Rosehill said. "I have never played against him where I had to do something like that."

Obviously he felt he had to do react to the hit.

"The fact is whether it was a dirty hit or not, a guy on my line went down," Rosehill said. "With our team, guys like that are going to have to answer to somebody."

They're local guys, did you honestly expect something different? They only do regional and radio games. The majority of local guys are homers.

We technically have 1a and 1b lines, and yes he's good enough for them.

I think the sample size is large enough to conclusively rule that Shelley should be shot into orbit.

Shelley's entire career should have shown that he has no place on this team, yet Homer overpaid him for three years. I doubt he's going away.

Voracek is a wizard with the puck on his stick. Him and Briere had some serious chemistry going already, put hartnell or* simmonds on that line and watch out.

Hey Philly fans. Leaf fan here just to offer some feedback on tonight's game.

Voracek looks real good
Gus did too
Schenn is going to be fun to watch for you guys.
Hyka had a nice goal. I don't see what the big deal was for the celebration. I think it's nice to see young kids get excited about their goals regardless if it is preseason.
Shelley, why is he even here?

Have a great season!
