Flyers enforcer Jody Shelley was suspended 10 total games on Thursday for his boarding hit on Toronto’s Darryl Boyce in Wednesday’s 4-2 exhibition loss.
Shelley’s suspension, handed down by newly appointed NHL czar of discipline Brendan Shanahan, will carry over into the regular season. Shelley will miss five regular season games in addition to the team's remaining five preseason games.
This is Shanny’s first order of business on the new job and it’s apparent he is going to set a standard and not deviate from it, which often seemed to have under his predecessor, Colin Campbell.

That hit will be the centerpiece feature on the video compilation that the advocates for stricter enforcement on the rules committee will show when they have their mai tais and $15 blueberry muffins at the Boca Raton Resort or wherever the next meetings will be held. It was indefensible.
I hope the NHL remains consistent with the new crew of disciplinarians. I won't hold my breath, though.
The suspension is perfectly acceptable, given what Shelley did. Unfortunately, history has dictated that a Flyer doing something dumb versus a Canadian team receives a far greater punishment than the norm.
The next blind side hit from behind better result in a suspension of at least 5 games. Again, I won't hold my breath.
I deride your truth handling abilities
I really like how Shanny shows the tape(s) and details the rule he is calling him on... and explains what determined the suspension.
... As for seeing five games on similar infractions: Shanny mentions how blatant Shelley's action was as well as his being a repeat suspended player coming to play in the decision of length... Like infractions may not draw the same suspension based on the past record and the players actions in it.
Thus we may still see Shanny opening himself up for debate on suspension... but at least he will be explaining the whys and wherefores of each case... which should help us see where here may be differences in his rulings.
Shelley missing the rest of preseason is going to hurt his chances of being on the big club. At 1.1M Dollars, he certainly doesn't seem to be earning his paycheck, especially not if he is going to be doing **** like this on a regular basis.
This suspension was a no brainer, Shanahan got this right 5 preseason games + 5 regular season games (or roughly 1/16th of the season) sounds about right to me.
