That banana garbage is messed up. Anyone who was around whoever threw that should be turning that racist jerk in.

A post-game report:

http://phillysportsdaily.com/flyers/...ut-to-detroit/

Quote:
Peter Laviolette’s goal of the preseason is to evaluate his talent and see how the chemistry is working, not to win hockey games. Well on Thursday night, things didn’t look good, but then his talent played well, created chemistry and eventually overcame a two-goal deficit. However, they dropped a 4-3 decision to the Detroit Red Wings in a shootout. He’ll take it.

In the first period, Michael Leighton made some nice saves to keep the Flyers in it, but a Darren Helm shorthanded goal put the Red Wings up 1-0. Struggling to capitalize on opportunities, as they had on Wednesday night against Toronto, the Flyers couldn’t beat starting goalie Ty Conklin.

While the Flyers mustered few shots, Leighton remained sharp in the second period, but Valtteri Filppula deflected a shot past Leighton that the goalie had no chance on. Shortly thereafter, the Flyers found the scoreboard when Claude Giroux hit James van Riemsdyk with a pass that he buried for a goal to cut the lead to one.

LONDON, Ontario _ Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds, one of the NHL’s few black players, had a banana thrown at him from the stands as he started the shoot-out against Detroit on Thursday night at the Labatt Centre.

The arena is operated by Global Spectrum, a subsidiary of the Flyers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor.

The banana sailed past Simmonds and he kept his concentration and scored, but the Flyers lost in the shoot-out, 4-3.

“At first, I thought I better get another shot if I miss,” Simmonds said in the Flyers’ locker room after the game. “But I did score, so that was good.”

Simmonds 23, who came to the Flyers in the deal that sent Mike Richards to Los Angeles in the summer, was asked if he ever had anything like this happen to him that had racial overtones.

“I’ve never had a banana thrown at me before. That’s a first for me,” he said. “I guess it’s something I obviously have to deal with _ being a black player playing a predominantly white sport. I’ve grown a lot playing in this league and throughout my whole life. I’m not going to dwell on that. It’s over with now.”

Such a ******** act from an ignorant fan. Simmer became my favorite kings player over the last few years and it's ridiculous things like this still happen in 2011. He took the high road in his post game comments but I wouldn't have minded one bit if he wanted to beat the **** out of the moron who did this.

Didnt catch the game tonight. How did giroux and JVR look together? I know JVR had 3 points/2 goals, but besides that.

Also, was it a full banana? Because when I first heard that someone threw a banana it didn't even occur to me that it was racist, the first thing that came to mind was the whole 'slip on a banana peel' thing. But I guess the motive would have to be there, if you're doing something like that, you're thinking about it.

It's amazing that people still cant further their intelligence beyond such a primal sense of difference.

Not many had the ability to watch the game. Viewing seemed to be limited and at times delayed or sporadic. Twitter remarks by the writers was the method a few of us used.

"I would have went and kicked that fan's ass myself," one teammate said, asking to remain nameless. "That's just not right."

I wonder who said that haha.

Obviously Euro trash xenophobia is not limited to European soccer...

Quote:
The soccer stadiums of Europe have become cauldrons of racial hatred, and soccer authorities seem unable to agree on what to do about the problem — or even if there is a problem at all.

Racism forms part of the weekly sporting action across Europe. But soccer's tribal culture has become a catalyst to increasing xenophobic hatred spread by extremists who infiltrate the crowds, with sinister implications for society at large.

When pressed by the International Herald Tribune to comment for this special report, FIFA and UEFA, the governing bodies of world and European soccer, agreed that racism posed a threat but seemed unsure what action to take. The attitudes of the national soccer federations are less consistent. Some are trying to address the problem. Others accept that it exists but say it is society's responsibility, not theirs. Others pretend the danger does not exist at all.

Simmonds was on OTR in the summer with Joel Ward, Kevin Weekes and Anthony Stewart discussing this issue. All of them seemed pretty cool about it and recognized there's always an ignorant few... It's always going to be the case in a predominantly white game, unfortunately.

I genuinely feel bad for whoever threw it... Guy must have some serious problems. They don't sell bananas there either, so he planned it ahead of time which is even more disturbing.

Looks like a good result against a pretty strong detroit team. Simmonds is so freaking awesome. Breakout year for him I think.

The chemistry some players are developing already looks amazing. We all knew about JVR and Giroux. But Simmonds and Schenn are looking very impressive, Gus and timonen look awesome.

This is going to be a great year.

He was very good at the end after a so-so start. The speed of the play in tight is too much for him at times, but that will come with coordination. He has great instincts with the puck, and plays good D.

He made a couple really nice plays but it's clear that he's going to be a very good NHL player, but probably not this year.

Voracek and Nodl looked good together too, vs. Toronto.

Can't wait to see how Jagr fits in...
