MSGHD Coming to Fios & U-Verse (CABLE DISCUSSION)

Reposting this from the Rags board, figured i'd share:

Quote:
The FCC today has ruled that a pair of high-definition regional sports channels operated by Cablevision’s Madison Square Garden network must be offered to Verizon’s FiOS and AT&T’s U-Verse video services. The move comes after a complaint was filed in July that said MSG refused to sell the formats — which Cablevision carries in its stable of offerings — in the greater New York region, thereby hindering competition. “By directing Cablevision and MSG to make their high-definition programming available within 30 days, the decision promises to give consumers in New York and New Jersey a choice to obtain the sports programming they want,” Verizon SVP and deputy general counsel Mike Glover said in a statement from Verizon announcing the ruling. Verizon also had to petition the FCC to allow it access to standard-definition versions of the channels in 2006.

Now we need a mandate that MSG plus 2 can only be on an HD channel and we're on to something.

This is the one part of hockey season that really grinds my gears. I just don't understand how this monopolistic ***** can legally do this.

This is the one and only reason I have never considered switching to FiOS.

For people with FiOS:

1. How bad does a game look without HD?
2. Are you pleased with all other aspects of FiOS?
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of having FiOS?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

1) not as good as HD, but much better then cablevision SD

2) MORE then pleased. FiOS TV beats the **** out of cablevision in every way .. quality of HD, amount of HD, amount of channels, ect. The FiOS internet is blazing fast, and does not bog down during peak usage.

3) The only disadvantage is that you have some extra taxes added onto your bill that cable doesnt .. if you have the choice, you can bargain with Verizon and get a great package for a comparable price. If you choose FiOS all digital phone you have to dial the area code (even if dialing in the same area code). You get used to it.

I believe the appeal will be fast tracked because the FCC sees through their game. The issue (and time) will be when cablevision challanges the FCC authority to do this, and takes it to the Supreme Court. I dont have much of a hope for this season .. but the 12-13 we should have it.

Good news for FiOS customers.

Fios?

My brother has fios and was wondering if the Center Ice package on fios sometimes broadcasts the away fed when MSG plus doesnt show Isles in HD? This happens sometimes for me on Direct TV. Sorry if this has been talked about before. Also, will fios have the Islander games on MSG in HD? Thanks!

As long as it's a done deal by next spring, I'll be a happy camper... my triple play discount runs out in June and after that, FIOS will become a much better bargain for me. Sadly, the #1 reason I went with Cablevision instead of FIOS was because I wouldn't get the Isles in HD

As a Fios household since October '07, now that this HD thing MIGHT have come to an end (I am still not holding my breath)....really the only thing Monopovision has over Fios is the whole walking into a coffe shop and getting free Wifi through iO.

Now to think of it, more and more places have free Wifi now., eventually Cablevision has no advantages over Fios. Except all the places cable would not let Verizon go to. Like out in certain parts of Brookhaven Township.

The best thing is all the free On Demand stuff, I dont think iO has that much(from what I know).

It's not that cablevision hasent allowed Verizon to roll out fios in some areas, it's that Verizon isn't willing to pay the high fees to the towns where cablevision has politicians in their pocket.

This is why Fios is only available in incorporated villages within the town of Brookhaven. Verizon can bypass the towns politicians and go directly to the village.

Well paying off pols so they raise the rate for a competitor is not allowing Verizon to go into certain areas there. (I only know this because some guys at work were talking about it and one said that Verizon isn't there) So therefore (via politicians out there)Cablevision is not letting Fios there. Plus I know people in Sayville, Bohemia, Patchogue and points east that don't have it.

Optimum Wifi only works in one place, the Coliseum.

Everywhere else it's only strong enough for you to connect and drop immediately.

What the hell man.. I clicked on the video and followed the instructions and instead saw myself spiking my hair straight up and wearing an Aflliction shirt and diesel jeans and my skin is orange.. Is this what HD is??

on directv, center ice carries most game in HD, while cable only holds 1 or 2 hd games a night.. and for opening night.. they listed HD feeds for both florida and the isles broadcasts on directv.. so it looks like center ice finally has a deal with MSG for the HD feeds, granted, it would only be seen on directv since cable doesnt have the ability to host all of center ice's hd feeds.. and cable would choose a random 2 games to air that night...

as odd as this sounds, i would try to call in to bettman's radio show tomorrow (info on nhl.com) and ask about that issue.. a lot of ppl call him about blackout issues, and his producer takes your info and they will reply back to you with details and such, and if its an accidental issue , the league will try to get in contact with the provider and get it fixed.....
