Canucks sign D Frank Corrado to ELC, assign to Sudbury

"Canucks have signed defenceman Frank Corrado & assigned him to the @Sudbury_Wolves of the #OHL"
-Dhmaciban

Well deserved contract. Thought he'd get at least one more look.

Quote:
Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager Mike Gillis announced today that the Canucks have signed defenceman Frank Corrado.

Corrado, 18, averaged 20:46 ice time per game, blocked four shots and was +1 through two NHL Pre-Season games played with the Vancouver Canucks in 2011.

The Woodbridge, Ontario native spent the 2010.11 season with the Sudbury Wolves of the Ontario Hockey League, collecting 30 points (4-26-67) in 67 games.

The 6’0”, 188-pound defenceman was selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the fifth round, 150th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

Corrado has been assigned to his junior club, the Sudbury Wolves of the OHL.

He played well last night. Looking forward to watching him develop.

He reminds me a bit of Bieksa.

This signing pleases me.

But if in the future the coach disrespects my nephew Frankie Corrado like he done with that Ballard boy he's gonna end up feeding the fish like *****.

Interesting. Gillis really isn't wasting any time signing his prospects. 5th round picks don't often get an NHL contract so soon so good for Corrado. Corrado's been a guy who has kind of fallen under the radar a bit. Granted he's a guy with offensive talents who hasn't exactly produced big offensive numbers. Lets hope Corrado has a great year down in the OHL.

Good idea, if he blossoms we could save a lot of money by signing now.

Corrado showed enough I suppose to earn it. Needs a good OHL year.

Well deserved, a very pleasant surprise at camp this year. A bit surprised he was immediately sent back to Sudbury, but it was obvious he was going back sooner rather than later.

Flipside, though, of signing non-elite prospects at age 18 is that if they don't develop you're stuck with a wasted contract slot for 3 years. See Tochkin, Kellen.

But Corrado looked promising in his games - hopefully he can grow an inch or two and make a run at Canada's WJC team over the next two years.

The bonus is that he adds another right hand shot to the Canucks D (Hmmm... I guess that's also like Bieksa. Getting eerie)

Salo
Bieksa
Tanev
Corrado
Price
Hannay

That's faster than I expected. Went from being one of my fav draft sleepers to being selected by us and now a contract.

His play certainly deserved it though.

I think he'll have a very big year in the OHL. He and Justin Sefton became the top pairing for Sudbury by the end of the year, which should carry onwards this season. I'm hoping he becomes a bigger force on the PP this season (he played with McFadden there) and hope he can develop some more muscle and strength this season/offseason.

I'd say Polasek reminds me more of Bieksa than Corrado ever will. I really don't know who Corrado reminds me of. He's an excellent skater with top acceleration, non-stop motor and never gives up on plays, makes a good first pass and carries the puck well. Needs more strength to move players away in front of the net and along the boards. But the main message here is that we should just keep drafting D-men in the 5th round - they look promising . Now if Andersson could find his game, that'd be nice.

Here's a video i made in the summer if anyone missed it or is interested.

Kid's dman hockey IQ is excellent. He adjusted to the level of play without the benefit professional experience or coaching. Tbh, the only negative in his game was his lack of size and strength. Another Chris Tanev. Probably a better prospect than 2-3 of our other signed dmen at this stage.

As to why sign him now, I don't even know why teams sign players to contracts while they're still in junior to begin with - maybe they're afraid the player won't sign and becomes a free agent after a certain period? By signing him now, he's pretty well locked up for 9 years, no?

Good stuff. Seems like Gillis really likes what he did at the draft table this year.

Never knew Volpatti was Italian!

That's quite a number of them right there, with Luongo like the Godfather indeed... bunch of classless thugs.

Dig it. Corrado looked good in the preseason here. Good IQ from what I could tell. If he can ramp up his offensive game a bit, we've got a steal. If not, he's still a good serviceable d-man with good wheels. As others have said, he just needs to put on some muscle.
