I think I'm one of the few with this opinion: McIlrath has looked pretty good this preseason. He's still extremely young, but the more time he can spend around the big team the better awareness he'll have as to what it takes to be a professional athlete.
I think it's pretty clear that we're not going to keep any goalies besides Hank and Biron, so I think the reason Stajcer is still here is because the other guys each got a game and he didn't. He'll get half of the Monday game and then get sent down.
Pleased to see McI will get another game or two. Would love to see him continue to play like he did Wednesday. Would have liked to see Miller get an extra game, not because I thought he'd make it but just because he's an exciting young player to watch and the experience can't be bad for him. Not surprised about Thomas. Not surprised about Vtank either. Had a few 'discussions' with people here who argued he could be one of our six d-men going into this year and voiced the opinion that he's lucky to ever have an NHL career, let alone be in our starting six. Feeling a little vindicated there, considering I was told by at least one or two posters that I was severely underrating him and all he could bring to the table.
Thought McColgan or Miller could have earned one more game, just for fun, over one of Newbury, Deveaux or Thuresson, but I guess they want to get Thuresson into a game?
Keep in mind that Newbury would need to pass through waivers to be sent to the AHL. This could be a simple paper transaction of keeping him on the NHL camp roster until it's time to send all waiver eligible guys down at the same time.
Kundratek didn't play in a pre-season game. He played in the AHL game yesterday. He was cut. Valentenko got 1 pre-season game before he was cut. Ouch.
Defenseman Pavel Valentenko really did not have a good game against the Devils in last night’s 4-3 preseason win and, in general, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Valentenko did not have a good training camp, showing little of the hard shot or physical play that got him noticed last season. The 23-year-old (24 in October) went on to have five goals, 12 assists and 38 penalty minutes in 79 games last season for Connecticut (AHL) and while he was assigned back to the Whale, there have been rumblings he’ll instead head back to Russia.
