Pre-Season Waived Players

Instead of having a thread asking if we should claim a waived player every time someone is waived, I thought Id start one where we can discuss all waived players since there will be alot in the coming days and weeks.

Bob Mackenzie
Quote:
Lots of waivers. Will be posted on tsn.ca shortly. Notables: Kotalik(BUF), Shaone Morrison (BUF), Huet (CHI), Godard (DAL), Redden (NYR).
Now nothing earth shattering here, but should we look at Morrison as insurance if Whitney isnt ready for the season? Only 1 year remaining at 2.075, seems like little risk would be involved in this, unless he is really that bad, but I was more under the impression it was all about the money to get Buffalo under the cap. Discuss.

Godard? Really? Let's hope that Vancouver doesn't pick him up.

Oilers need d-men more than Mars needs MILFs.

Great movie, BTW.

First that I've ever heard of that movie. Something tells me that it wasn't released in theaters, well the theaters that are family friendly anyway

All those players suck so no real upgrade. We have lots of forwards and not enough D-men I think its obvious what we have to do.

Didn't Dallas just sign Godard? Nice way to endear yourself to free agents....

Friendlier than this season will be to Oilers fans. I'm afraid my son will sneak out of bed and be terrified by around the second period most nights.

Yes, make some of the forwards play defence!

Somebody call Jason Strudwick!

Shaone Morrison is a decent hockey player imo. He'd be as good or better as Sutton or Barker. Problem is that we've already got Sutton and Barker and not enough contract openings left. So grabbing him really isn't an option.

No one else really stands out either

One strategy for the Oilers would be to just pick up every goon or semi-goon that shows up on waivers and beat face this year while letting their youth develop... and as a plus they'll pick up a flash new prospect in the lottery while they are at it. Win-Win-Win

Shanahan is throwing out suspensions right and left and the Oilers will likely see some of their players (Peckham, Sutton, Eager, Hordichuk etc) hit by that flak as well eventually.

They also have a head start on their annual injury parade... Teubert-Eager-Hemsky-Whitney etc etc. so I'm expecting a revolving door from OKC to the Oilers all year long.

I'm betting we see 35-40 different players play for the Oilers by the end of this season.

Not sure I understand. This always happens when veterans sign as free agents but don't make the team.

Goddard isn't guareented anything, if he didn't make the team nobody will hold that against Dallas.

Morrisonn is interesting, but as one poster said contract space is an issue. The other thing i worry about is (correct me if i'm wrong), but the oilers only get waiver priority once, meaning if they claim Morrisonn they may not be able to claim a more useful player at the end of camp. Does anybody know if that's the case for sure...

My thoughts exactly when I looked at this list . Fedoruk didn't do himself any favors in his two fights with Hordichuck . According to the assistant GM of the Canucks (sorry I forgot his name - but I heard an interview on the pre-game against the Canucks) they are definitely looking to add toughness
Godard is not a guy we want to face more than once a year .

I dont think its like that, I could be wrong though. I think who ever is in last gets it, so the oilers get it till some deadline at the start of the season where they will then switch the order to 2011/2012 standings and teams at the top get unlimited claims. Not 100% sure though.

If it's anything like last season, they have waiver priority until the end of October. Once November strikes, waivers are conducted according to NHL standings.

This page does a good job of explaining the waivers process:

http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/20...ide-to-the-nhl

"Waiver Priority

If more than one team puts in a claim on a player during the waiver period, then the team with the higher waiver priority's claim is accepted.

If the claim is before November 1, waiver priority is based on the previous year's standings, with the team with the worst record having first priority and the team with the best record having last priority.

If the claim is after November 1, waiver priority is based on the current year's standings, defined as the lowest percentage of possible points."

So essentially... the Oilers get first crack at each and every player that hits the waiver wire between now and Nov 1st.

So far nothing exciting there. I would imagine the Oilers won't be picking anyone up from the waivers given the backlog of players on pro contracts.

When was the last time an Oiler got suspended? None come to mind.

Just looked it up and it was Igor Ulanov, December 2000 for cross-checking Brendon Morrow of the Dallas Stars. He was given 2 games.

That has to be the current record, 11 years without a single player on your team being suspended

Can't be right. Torres got suspended for a hit against a Flame more recently than that.

I remember Chuck Guite used to kill the Oilers when he played with the Avs, and I find it interest, the center piece of that epic Poni trade to Pit is now on waivers, How Burke, How?
