They joke about stuff like Ottawa media drinking on the plane, but it's representative of a completely unprofessional attitude towards journalism.

Toronto and Montreal are lucky in that they at least have some quality journalists that care more about facts and reality than their ability to get close or friendly with the team.

*Yeah I lied, I totally can believe it. Par for the course with the cronyism that exists in sports media.
The better sports journalists are usually going to end up in the bigger cities eventually. It's not shocking that Ottawa's sports media is brutal in comparison to those in Montreal or Toronto.

Look at the revolving door of team 1200 personalities that used Ottawa as a springboard to bigger things.

I'm sure that there are some who choose to stay in Ottawa because they're happy here. Not all of them are terrible. But some are just stuck here because they're established and nobody else wants them.

I think you are probably right. however I think we are a better team with this:

Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Michalek Dacosta Alfie
Foligno Regin Zbad
Greening Smith Neil

I think they need to find a way to get Regin Dacosta and Zbad in the line up at the same time.Any combo of the guys listed in that top 9 is what we should roll with, in fact I wouldn't mind seeing Michalek move to RW.

As far as defense goes, IMO Carkner, Lee and Borocop are all ahead of Kuba

The offense looks very weak
Changing the top two lines to reflect the better players (for analysis):

Michalek - Spezza - Alfredsson 1st line
Filatov - Regin - Butler 3rd line
Foligno - Z.Smith - Condra 4th line
Greening - Konopka - Neil 4th line

Our best three players are injury prone and that leaves a very weak group. We have to hope Filatov and Butler really work out.

Carkner, Lee, Rundblad, Borocop, Weircioch, Gryba.....are all preferred options over Kuba at this point.

Yeah. From the bit of the game I saw last night, Boro was really good. I think he should start in the top 6.

I think after tonight, were probably going to be looking at this October 7th:

Filatov-Spezza-Butler
Michalek-Da Costa-Alfredsson
Foligno-Regin-Neil
Greening-Smith-Condra
Konopka/Winny

Cowen-Gonchar
Carkner-Karlsson
Phillips-Lee
Kuba/Borocop(if Kuba is somehow removed from the roster)

I'm just not sure if they will even have room to give Zibby his 9 games right now, and Rundblad needs about 15-20 games in Bingo before coming back up and beasting it.

I agree that Rundblad isn't too far off from being very good, but I don't like that 1st line so much. Foligno and Condra may play in the top 6. I don't think Filatov and Butler are cemented there just yet, and I still have my doubts on Filatov as an NHL player.

We could see a forward lineup like this eventually:

Foligno-Spezza-Alfedsson
Michalek-Da Costa-Condra
Greening-Regin-Butler
Smith-Winchester-Neil

I hope you guys realize that Filatov is a play maker more than he is a scorer.

Filatov & Spezza = 40 goals season for Butler

From what I've seen, this would be my team based on their pre season play and chemistry, I could see this team making the playoffs in 8th spot as well.

Filatov - Spezza - Alfie
Michalek - De Costa - Butler
Foligno - Regin - Condra
Greening - Z. Smith - Neil

Cowen - Gonchar
Phillips - Karlsson
Carkner - Rundblad

Lehner
Anderson

Of course there is no Kuba, Lee or Auld in this lineup, but this would be my team on opening night. There is now way Lehner is our starter on opening night either, but to me he looks like a better goalie then Anderson.

I don't know if Anderson handles his crease that well with speed and traffic around him, Lehner seems to have a much better command and actually looks bigger the more chaos is around him where as Anderson seems to get small and deep into his net very quickly when the pressure is on. It's only pre season I know, but just based on preseason play I'd say Lehner to me looks like the true #1 starter and Anderson looks like the #2.

That's because your lines are awfully spread. But you're right, the key to our offense is the health of our main forwards. However, we have some intriguing potential in Filatov, Butler, Regin and Da Costa. There's many others but that's for next year or beyond that, so I'm just talkin about those now.

If McLean puts the 3 vets (like your post suggests), he fails big time.

What I hope/would like :

Nikita Filatov ($2.195m) / Jason Spezza ($7.000m) / Daniel Alfredsson ($4.875m)
Peter Regin ($1.000m) / Stephane Da Costa ($1.325m) / Milan Michalek ($4.333m)
Nick Foligno ($1.200m) / Jesse Winchester ($0.750m) / Bobby Butler ($1.050m)
Colin Greening ($0.816m) / Zack Smith ($0.700m) / Chris Neil ($2.000m)
Zenon Konopka ($0.700m) / Erik Condra ($0.625m)

DEFENSEMEN
Chris Phillips ($3.083m) / Brian Lee ($0.875m)
Jared Cowen ($1.265m) / Erik Karlsson ($1.300m)
Sergei Gonchar ($5.500m) / David Rundblad ($1.500m)
Filip Kuba ($3.700m) / Matt Carkner ($0.700m)

GOALTENDERS
Craig Anderson ($3.187m) / Alex Auld ($1.000m)

When Alfie gets injured, Butler goes at Spezza's right. Filatov will be more experienced then and I believe he has a very good 2-way game. Filatov-Spezza-Butler wouldn't rock physically but would rely on their speed/skill, which they have in tons. Let's not worry about the physical element for now. Zibanejad, Silfverberg, Noesen, Stone will be there soon enough

Some people will say : Winchester as the 3rd line center? Yes, he is a much better playmaker than Zack Smith. Very good on face-offs and along the boards. Foligno and Winnie would totally dominate the cycling and then feed the puck to Butler, who will score goals against weaker defensive pairings. That's only a short term solution though. A lot of better players will be there in the next 2 years (Hoffman, Grant...)

Hopefully McLean doesn't see things like this.

Please tell me this is a joke. Please. Carey Price has a 4.96 GAA and a .831 SV%. Habs should waive him! You said it yourself, it's the PRESEASON. Nothing can be learned about veterans. NOTHING.

That being said, good line-up, makes sense. I only hope that we find a way to play Michalek on RW. I want him to return to SJ form!

given that things will probably change, as of right now if we were to play a very important game tomorrow, from what i have seen so far (and especially last night) this is the lineup i believe would give us the very best chance of winning,

Greening-Spezza-Butler
Michalek-DaCosta-Alfredsson
Foligno-Regin-Neil
Filatov-Smith-Condra

Phillips-Lee
Cowen-Gonchar
Carkner-Karlsson

Greening was flying last night, really using his size and speed to drive the net and hunt down pucks. I really think that at this point he's a better fit for the 1st line. it pushes filatov(as good as he was playing) way down to the 4th, but i would use him on the pp and 4 on 4 every chance.

I am not very good with the cap rules and numbers and all but if we "get rid" of Kuba won't we be below the cap floor and need to take on a contract to replace his?

Really? Does Filip Kuba look good to you in pre-season? Does Mark Parrish look NHL ready to you? Or will this all change in the regular season?

I like Lehner as my starter then Anderson and I like his on ice presence, veteran or not, take away Anderson's 4 year deal and compare them on pre-seasn play alone and Lehner would gte the starting job.

I think Anderson has to answer the same questions, to me Anderson hasn't proven anything to make me believe he's the hands down starter of tis team if anything he's gone from non-playoff team to non-playoff team and been unspectacular his entire career.
