This is the full quote from the Rangers' Facebook:
Rangers head coach John Tortorella announced after today's practices that Marc Staal will not be traveling to Europe with the team following Monday night's pre-season game in Philadelphia. "He will not be on the trip," stated Tortorella. "We are hoping as he continues his procedures with the specialists that I will have an update in 4-5 days. We're gonna try and get him on the trip. Once he's ready to do all the stuff we want him to do to prepare for the regular season, we'll have him come out." Tortorella did not rule out Staal - who has been experiencing headaches since the summer - from playing in the season opener in Stockholm October 7th.
Acupuncture is also another form of treatment that has proven beneficial in relieving a player’s concussion symptoms. Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles at certain points in the body that can relieve pain, ringing in the ears, nausea and other associated symptoms. Usually after just a few treatments many patients will find themselves with less headaches and more energy.
The best medicine for a concussion is time. Let him rest up and get back to 100% before bringing him back.
Staal was cleared for contact. His brain is fully healed. Right now he is experiencing PCS, which sucks, but is said to be more psychological than anything. Hopefully he gets over this hump and is ready for the season, because we sure do need him.
I've been thinking about this and a similar situation we had in my family. There is ZERO reason to take any chances. A person with post concussion symptoms does not belong on a transatlantic flight. Glad they are being cautious with Staal. They are doing the right thing.
Still hate all of this. Torts is talking out his ass cause he, like everyone else, has no idea what's going on.
It's a freaking concussion. The worst possible thing IMO. If he's not ready to make the flight after the Flyers game why would he be ready the week after that? How does that make any sense?
This whole thing is ridiculous. Shut the kid the **** down. Why is he skating? Why is he working out? Just shut him down for a while until he has an extended period of time where he says he has had no symptoms. When that happens then let him start working out and skating.
I have no desire for this team to be without Staal, but I'd much rather be without him for October/November potentially then late in the season.
It just seems like no one knows what the **** is going on. And that's because they don't. Cause it's a ****ing concussion.
I like your optimism, but at this point I would be thrilled if he can play in the Oct 15 game on the Island. Would not be surprised at all if we don't see him until we return from out west for the home opener on the 27th. Right now to start the season they need and seem to be taking all necessary precautions, better safe than sorry. Reallistically it sounds like no one has a concrete idea of when Staal will be ready. Right now it is all hope and speculation, it is a day-to-day/week-to-week thing. Obviously if he can meet up with the team in Europe it would be a great way for us to kick off the season.
