My 2 cents:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Brouwer
Semin-Johansson-Ward
Chimera-Laich-Knuble
Hendricks-Halpern-Sjogren

-Brouwer thrives when he's with talented players
-Ward wins board battles, important for a Semin line
-3rd line can shutdown other lines and chip in offensively
-4th is what it is, I'd prefer Sjogren to go be a physical forechecker and not worry so much on defense

Ovechkin-Johansson-Knuble
Brouwer-Backstrom-Semin
Chimera-Laich-Ward
Hendricks-Halpern-Beagle/Sjogren
Beagle/Sjogren, King

Beagle has looked surprisingly good this preseason. Woof. I think the Ovechkin-Johansson-Knuble line played too well together at the end of the season and in the playoffs to ignore. Brouwer can play the LW and be the physical presence on the Backstrom-Semin line (he has already talked about using his physical game to create space for his linemates - just what Backstrom and Semin need). 3rd line is missing a backup faceoff guy, which forces the 4th line to take the heavy defensive minutes. Despite the Hendricks-Halpern chemistry that's been talked up, considering Laich-Halpern-Ward for the 3rd line, with Chimera-Beagle-Sjogren on 4. God that bottom six is a complicated mess.

Bourque is on a one year/ two-way contract with a high AHL salary.

He has to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL.

He is exempt from re-entry waivers (by my reading of the rule).

So he could start in the AHL without hitting waivers?

I don't see why it would be considered being sent to the AHL if he wasn't on the NHL roster in the first place, but obviously it is. Unfortunate; it looks like they'll have to expose some people we like.

the pre season expectations got evened out a bit today. hradek and rosen on nhl.com both picked the penguins to go to the finals from the east. the flyers and rangers got mentions and the caps got nothing.

How many points are you expecting out of Ward?

from what ive read, orlov has high end offensive skills and hits like a mo-fo, but doesnt really have a defensive game at present. say...early blaska like.

I think the only way Orlov sees the NHL this season is if the Caps have a lot of injuries on the blue line. His defensive game is just not there yet. The exciting thing is that it clearly will be at some point, and he will be a force when his defense catches up to his offensive abilities.

I'm not saying he is anywhere close to ready for regular action this year but there is a 100% chance he at least gets a cup of coffee this year lots of injuries or not...

IMO of course

as soon as one of Green/Carlson/Wideman is injured Orlov will be called-up IMHO

it should be getting him experience as well as it was with Holtby last year (when he got owned in his 1st stint and then got better in later appearances).

Orlov has skills to pay 'em. If he needs to work on his defensive game then he can talk to Sergei Gonchar who took a similar route w/the Caps.

Orlov is smaller than I thought he was. 176 lbs. He doesn't look 6' tall. Maybe with his skates on? He does have a hard shot , but so does Godfrey.

With him being another right handed shot I see Collins getting the call up before Orlov. Collins just appears more solid.

Also P. McNeill is a better skater. Sorry. I see some limited call ups this year. Maybe more next year? I don't see the team keeping both Green and Carlson next year so Orlov might be a good replacement for Green.

Hey guys I have a hard time believing that they are going to pay someone 4.5 millon to play one the 3 rd line. I think the coaching staff is just trying different looks just in case they have to mix it up during the season and this is the best time to do it when preseason games don’t count. At the end of the day I think it will end up like this.

Ovechkin-Backstrom- Knuble
Semin-Johansson- Laich
Brouwer- Halpern – Ward
Chimera-Hendrick - Sjogren

they pay laich for his power play and penalty killing ability and that he can play all three forward spots with top 9 quality and can play a passable nhl defenseman as well.

they have no reason to use laich on the 3rd line as a winger, but seeing him regularly at 3rd line center makes perfect sense should they choose to do that. there are few 3rd line centers that are also on their team's 1st pp and pk units. i'd say that would be worth his check for sure

That is exactly it your 3rd line Center should not be play on the PP he should play PK good defense and win 60% of his face-offs. He is not suited to play center he like to bang crash the net etc. that’s his bread and butter. If he does that at center he will get caught out of position all the time which will lead to odd man rushes 2/1 and 3/2.

You know, with Vokoun and more of a veteran defense, I'd kind of like to see them go back to the run & gun. It probably won't happen but if the offense slumps in the 'hybrid' then it may be worth considering.
