Habs experimenting Plekanec and Kostitsyn as point men on the PP?

Leafs fan here, I come in peace. There is a video on TSN NHL page on the very right side where they are showing a video of Habs trying out Plekanec and Kostitsyn as D-men, which gave me a shock since I thought u guys would be competing for a cup run this year.

That being said, If this experiment does work, do u think there could be trade on the rise for possibly a center of Plekanec calibre? And what is your take on this?

U can watch the video on this link http://tsn.ca/nhl/

I am sorry if this is been discussed already but I just wanted to post to get some of your insight on this.

Its only on the point for the PP. Tsn kinda mislead what the story is actually about.

Not d-men

They might play on the point during PP until Markov is back.

As D-Men? No they are just used for point shots. Plus having 4 forwards on the ice on a power play, since Markov our QB may miss time.

I'm pretty sure they mean backend like on the Point of the PP, not 5 on 5 that would be ridiculous

As others have said, they're trying them on the PP only. It's not that uncommon, Brad Richards is a specialist at it for example. McGuire's argued that Plekanec should be used on the PP point for years now. Kostitsyn seems less likely to succeed, IMO.

As misleading as that article was, you thought the habs were converting two top 6 forwards into D?

As Martin said, they need someone to replace Markov on the first unit of the PP. None of our defense at the moment, aside from Subban, have what it takes for the position.

Kostitsyn played at the point during pre-season.

What you saw was probably PP training. We knew AK is trying for Point Man on the power play. First time I hear about Plek.

We are not in a position to send out top forward as defenseman, so I doubt it'll happen. We have a deep offense this year and are starting to be overstocked with D-men, some of them are still "?", but have potential.

And no. No trade for Plek, unless for some reason Gomez establish himself as a dominant #1 center and both Eller and Desharnais proved they can stomach top 6 minutes on a regular basis.

Ah, is that so, so they are only being experimented to play on the point for PP to replace Markov. I was kind of surprised that they would actually be used on Even strength, which wouldn't be a bad thing since both are capable of playing exceptional defence but that would only leave a huge hole open on the #1 center spot.

Thanks for the insight and have a great season.

I don't mind experimenting...but with Subban Markov Weber Yemelin plus possibly Diaz on the roster, we should need to put forwards at the point on the PP. I can see trying to get DD and AK on the top two units though. Maybe they want to bring him along slowly with little or no special teams, but Yemelin should be a pP and Pk guy by year end. He has good mobility, vision and gets his shot through on the PP.

Which is why the whole idea is ridiculous to begin with.

Did you posted this just to take a free shot at one of our player?

Wasnt talking to you . Your post was nice and interrogative, worthy of a polite and explicative reply.

Was talking to leafanforlife.. The post seemed wrote solely to take shots at Gomez

They tried Pleky at the point last year and the results were decidedly lukewarm.

Yeah....what the OP was asking was Are we converting Pleks and AK into full time Ds. Which makes absolutely 0 sense, I mean...yeah anyway.

No, they will not be full time Defensemen, they are being tried on the point, and Pleks is not for sale unless you guys feel like dishing out 2 1sts and a 2nd again

Man, I actually like that idea. Entertainin the thoughts of giving Eller some PP time. Kostitsyn main strenght on the PP is his ability to screen the goaltender, with his size, but he is not doing much while Eller would.

Both players (Kost and Plek) shoots left, so they shouldnt be on the same unit obviously.

If I'm JM I'd ride something along those lines for the last preseason game and if it work, I'd try it during regular season.

Pacioretty - Gomez - Gionta
Plekanec - Subban

Cole - Eller - Cammalleri
Kostitsyn - Subban (until Markov is ready, I'd double shift Subban. I mean who else are we gonna pencil there? Subban is efective and young enough)

It is really important for me to be the 20th person in this trhead to mention that it only applies to the PP.

I hate the idea, when has this actually worked? Big buff might of been the only guy in recent years where this has actually worked. Use Diaz or Yemelin on the powerplay

On the radio, apparently, they will put Plek and AK on the PP point.

So guess who will be the #1 PP center?

Desharnais
