Bryzgalov's interview to Sport- Express. ru

Excerpts from Bryzgalov’s interview to Slava Malamud in the Flyers dressing room on 9/24/2011

SM: I like your mask. Why tigers?

IB: First of all, the colors of the animals are the same as the team. Right? Secondly, there is a song “Eye of the tiger” from the movie “Rocky” that is related to Philadelphia..

SM: Would not it be better to draw Ivan Drago, then?

IB: No, it’s already “beaten to death”… And thirdly, I like these animals very much. Strong, gracious, beautiful. And lastly, this is Amur tiger. There are only about 500 left in Russia and in China.

SM: How do you like it in this area?

IB: It’s OK. We are getting used to it. Children have started school; we are looking for a house. I am not used to the conditions- it’s cold in the morning. It’s hard to get used to cold after 6 years in the South. I took my dog for a walk this morning and returned home for a jacket promptly. But I have none- did not need it Phoenix.

SM: Your children, most likely, not accustomed to other weathers than in Arizona?

IB: We took them to Colorado last year to show snow.

SM: Have they ever been to Russia?

IB: We get there every summer. They speak Russian well.

SM: But American school exterminates the native language, does not it? (Having had Russian speaking children in the American school I strongly disagree with this statement. CSKA)

IB: We have a rule at home- English at school, Russian at home.

SM: Has your son started playing hockey yet?

IB: He was in a beginners program in Arizona. He is just 5 years old. He will continue here.

SM: Does he want to be a goalie?

IB: Indeed. He told me recently that he wants to be a goalie, a spy and a scientist.

SM: I saw that you took your children sightseeing in Philadelphia.

IB: The team arranged for us a trip around the city in a horse drawn carriage. We toured old city, visited Betsy Ross’ house, visited Liberty Bell.

SM: Are you aware that Philadelphia is a center of Russian mafia?

IB: First time I’ve heard about it (me too, CSKA). I visited the Russian area just once- for shopping. I just wanted Russian food, but honestly it does not taste the same as in Russia. Everything is produced on Brighton Beach.

SM: What are your impressions about the team so far?

IB: Excellent. It’s beautiful that one can strive for the highest goal every year.

SM: Do you like a role of “the Savior”?

IB: Well, “the Savior” thing is not right. Does it mean that the Cup is guaranteed now? Nothing is ever guaranteed. The whole team needs to play well.

SM: Well, you said last spring: “there are heroes and there are scapegoats during the cup run. I am a goat.”

IB: I did not mean to call myself a scapegoat. It’s just because the decisive goal in Detroit series was on me. I took my attention off the player to assess the situation in the crease and he shot the puck in from practically no angle. The puck hit my pad and got into the net. My goal, there is nothing else to say. We lost because of it.

SM: Is it hard to forget these moments?

IB: Not really, why? One needs to move on. You can’t get stuck to that episode- would not help. And at the end, it’s just a game.

SM: Olympic Games in Sochi are almost upon us. You have an excellent chance to become a starter.

IB: It’s not right to claim the job now. The time will come and if Bryzgalov is the best in 2014, he should play. If Varlamov or Bobrovsky are better at that time- one of them should be a starter. You can’t just look at the names and contracts. You must only judge by the game.

SM: You and Bobrovsky have a chance to form a first great Russian goalie tandem.

IB: It’s ok with me. Sergey is young, talented and has a lot ahead. Judging by his work ethics, he has a bright future in the NHL.

SM: Do you see yourself in a role of the mentor?

IB: I still have to learn a lot myself.

SM: The press here in Philadelphia will put more pressure on you than you have ever had in Phoenix.

IB: But they do not really talk to me for some reason? Are they afraid? I am not scary. (Yells at the American journalists) Hey, fellows, I do not bite! Look I am a good guy.

English speaking press asks if Philadelphia is a more hockey town than Phoenix.

IB: Of course, I get to be recognized to on the streets.

Press: What do they say?

IB: Hey, Bryz, how are you? And something like that. Also; good luck, welcome to Philly and so forth. I do not have to pay for coffee.

Press: Wait till you have a bad day.

IB: I will have to pay double price then.

I always wondered why there were so many Russians here in Bucks County. Now I have my answer.

NE Phila and Lower Bucks are major Russian resettlement areas.

thx CSKA1974 great work for us!

Really like this interview. It seems he and Bob can create something together if both of them show the attitude they both mentioned in the interviews !

This guy is a piece of work. His dry sense of humor is refreshing to say the least.
