do you think flyers need one more forward upfront to be a true SC contender? if Forsberg or Gagne goes down we are weak upfront. I'd say we wait 30 more games and if it looks so-so we make a trade to get more firepower.

In the event of injury it would help, but they don't need another to become a real SC contender as they already are. Every team would be hurting if one or both of their top two players go down. The emergence of Richards as a legit top-6 player helps, and I don't expect Carter to struggle forever.

Isn't every team in the same position? In the salary cap era who can afford to lose one of their top 2 players? Even if they could add someone who do you think they could get that, what would it cost and could they fit them under the cap.

Besides they've averaged 4.2 goals per game over the first 5, goal scoring is not the problem, stopping them is the bigger issue right now.....

Maybe now five games in. I guarantee you that if they lost Sundin for the playoff they'd go absolutely nowhere.

I think they still have questions in net.

It's going to have to do. No $$$, and more pressing needs elsewhere. Esche was good enough last year, but a team really is in trouble when it is relying on Keith Primeau at this stage in his career for all their offense.

I think the Flyers should wait until the deadline until do something because
1) it will give them time to evaluate their needs, and
2) they're not adding salary too early in the season.

Think along the lines of a veteran in the last year of his contract. I predict they'll get a defenseman. Someone like Glen Wesley. (I have no idea if Wesley is in the last year of his contract, but somebody like him.)

after five games it is too early to tell. it is difficult to assess what we will need. there are so many variables. what happens when sami gets back? is he going to be put in as a goal scorer or a densive forward? is sim going to hack it? what are branko and carter going to do? i am sure everyone else that bleeds orange and black has thought through everything a million times.

this is my forecast, my opinion on what will happen

gagne-forsberg-knuble
richards-carter-kapanen
umberger-primeau-radio

that leaves handzus, sharp, stevenson, brashear, savage, sim

i could see sharp centering the forth
i see stevenson (once healthy) splitting time with umberger on the third and forth lines
and savage/brashear completing the fourth
i know everyone and their theory on handzus being traded
the reason he is out is cost
sim i dont think will make it
and as much as i would love to package out brashear, his salary is going to be tough to get rid of
i know a lot of people arent fans of savage, but i like him on the fourth line

defense

johnsson
pitkanen
hatcher
rathje
they are untouchable

desjardins, while i have no problem keeping him, his salary might need to be used to get someone at the deadline. he is borderline
seidenberg, i dont mind him as our sixth or seveth, but i could see him out in a package trade
therein, ya we are stuck with him

I see handzus getting traded. what direction they go, i have no idea

personally i would love a scoring RW, but there arent many we could afford that would really be an improvement

we also need insurance on defense. i would love to see us pick up a couple cheap 5th or 6th dmen

bottom line there will be some trades, but it is tough to say what we'll get
the new nhl, it is really tough to figure what will be available and at what cost
i dont think we'll see many trades by any team early
with the cap, it is a little more sink or swim, then just go buy replacement parts

For the Playoffs, an extra forward is probably a necessity. Luckily we have 4 second round picks as deadline trade bait and left over cap space.

I agree that they'll probably pick up another veteran at the deadline, but I don't think it's a necessity to make the team a real contender. More of an insurance move.

Clarke said he will not make a trade. THis Flyers team will roll with 12 forwards.
