YES.....good he really earned it.....He won me over with what he had to say about being an Islander and with his play.....Physical good shot blocker and good leadership........He will be just fine on a bottom pairing.....

A depth piece of some sort was necessary. He'll provide a bit of snarl that was necessary.

Glad to see he came to camp and 'showed up'. Judging by the interviews, he seems like a take charge guy who'll be a good influence on our youngins.

Now for the next Dman...

Very happy with this. Nothing wrong with a little veteran leadership plus he was great in the preseason.

I like the way Staios has played in the pre-season and am happy the Islanders signed him. We still need another D-man to make the playoffs. Unless we want to cross our fingers that Dehaan or Donovan are ready for the NHL. (I kind of doubt it and think they both need at least half a season in the AHL)

"Staios contract. Base salary 800. Bonuses up to 1.2 . Up to 1.6 if Isles win the Cup."

Not sure the last time I heard an incentive for one of our players to include a bonus for winning the cup.

I guess pretty much everyone has that written in. That'll make that cap hit 1.6K right?

Well there's a nice $400k that Wang will save.

Will help our depth. We've solved the Gervais conundrum, now it's just the top pairing we must improve.

Well, between him, Jurcina, and Eaton...we'll have at least one healthy d-man throughout the season.

Good signing though...he had a great camp and I think he's a great addition to this lockerroom.

Interesting.

During the Olympic break in 2010 I was actually staying at the same hotel as Staios, Horcoff, Moreau and Comrie in Hawaii. (And Yes the Duffster was there, and they got engaged that week also). They were there with their whole family. They were Oilers so I didn't give a hoot. They were some big boys (except for Comrie).

Wang will really regret that when Staios scores the cup winning goal (assisted by Mottau and Rolston)

I'm glad Staios is signed, he's a capable #6-7 dman.

But if you're thinking he's much of an upgrade over Hillen/Gervais then you'll be shocked once we get 10-12 games into the NHL regular season.

I would say he is an upgrade over Gervais and Hillen. Not a huge upgrade but enough to make a difference from those 2. More importantly, he helps out some of the younger defenseman while filling in or playing bottom pairing.

Now we still need major help on defense so let's keep hoping something else happens.

This makes the top 4 interesting.

My guess is you would put Striet, MacDonald, Hamonic, Jurcina as the top 4 right now. Im not sold on Eaton or Mottau, and I feel that Jurcina is a better fit in that top 4.

Problem is Hamonic and MacDonald are young — although Mac is a vet at this point, and if he can remain healthy, I thin right now he is the #2.

It would have been GREAT to be able to get a true number 2 to play with Streit, and I believe Snow tried with Ehrhoff, and in free agency, and it did not happen. (I dont blame Snow or Wang).

This would have allowed the Isles to feature a very good top pair, followed by a very good 2nd pair with Mac and Hamonic, and then balance it out with Eaton, Mottau and perhaps Staios.

I really feel that one piece is missing.

This group is not stellar, but it is capable and I think the team should compete well this year. Perhaps the #2 defender is yet to be added if the team performs well enough to make a run for a playoff spot. One thing for sure — we should not be considered a pushover.

If I dress up for the Islanders I'm an upgrade over Gervais. Hillen, yeah he's probably better than Staios but Gervais? He's got to be the worst defenseman in the NHL after Tyler Sloan.

EDIT: If Jurcina is healthy, I'd like to see a defense of:

Streit-Jurcina
MacDonald-Hamonic
Eaton-Staios
Mottau

Very nice pickup, I like what I saw from him, solid D play and will move into the offensive zone. This gives De haan and Donovan a year to learn in the AHL.

I don't want to debate whether Star Jones is sexier than Joan Rivers.

I don't have an issue with Staois, he's a capable depth defenseman. I'm still waiting for an upgrade though. Staois is replacing Martinek - that's a downgrade any way you care to measure.

I'm going to enjoy the team regardless, because there are a lot of players I like, that will improve this year.

But it's looking like another tough year for this team.

To me Staios, Eaton, Jurcina and Mottau are all place keepers for younger D-men to develop properly in AHL. We could see an upgrade as far as a trade at some point but i do believe the D will be ok and this team should not have trouble scoring goals. You also have to believe the goaltending will be fine as we have enough guys to have one emerge. I'm optomistic about this team, i believe a playoff contending team is easily the expectation with a possible higher than 8th see team as where they could be if things fall right.

Eaton and Staios scare me as a pair. Too little mobility/speed.

I would probably go
Streit-Hamonic
MacDonald-Eaton
Jurcina-Staios

^^ This.Should have signed Martinek. Staios is more physical (but slower), and he is right handed shot so we can have a righty/lefty alignment on each pairing. Makes things simpler for making & accepting passes between the pairs.

Proof management is truly aiming higher this year.

This may sound ridiculous but I believe this is a great signing by the Isles. Reminds me of when we signed Sean Hill. In my opinion he is an upgrade over Jurcina, Eaton and Mottau. Hopefully this means we will see limited minutes from Mottau this season as he was just painful to watch the few games he was in last year.
