Staal says he's not in game shape, not cleared for contact. Not sure he could get to game shape by season opener Oct. 7.

Rangers said he was cleared for contact.
So, is he cleared for contact or not?

Sounds like maybe he was cleared for contact and then they "uncleared" after training camp started and he had some problems

At this point, just get Staal ready for the Islander game in 2 weeks if he is ready to go. The Rangers play 2 games next Friday and Saturday but don't play again until the following week.

If he comes back or he doesn't, I think it's reasonable to declare October a mulligan for Staal. I he comes back, like you said, he will need time to get acclimated again. Not a good way to start the season. Gotta hope we score a whole bunch if goals and Henrik stands strong because we are going to have a tough time competing without out him in the lineup and/or without him being 100%.

That's what I was thinking as well. He ws cleared, his PCS symptoms returned, and they yanked the clearance.

At this point, even if he does reach a point in the next few days where he feels good to go, I'd still say they should just hold him back in the States. No sense putting him on a plane for that long with possible PCS for the sake of two out of conference games.

I wonder if anyone in contact with Staal ever considered mold issues within the air system where he lives?

A young guy like him, on his own for a couple years now may not be aware of changing the filter in his central air.

It's a common oversite and the molds & other toxins that build up when a filter is way past due can cause havoc on a persons health.

Just something that ran through my head when it was said the Doctors are baffled and the symptoms have come & gone at times. Would be worth looking into if the coming and going of those symptoms coinside with him being in his home, on the road, or back with his parents over the summer.

Well this sheds a little light on what has been going on

Quote:
Staal confirmed that the headaches are post-concussion symptoms stem from the hit his brother, Eric of the Hurricanes, laid on him on Feb. 22. And he said he did not skate this week as he recovered from a cortisone shot on Monday. He had an MRI on his neck on Friday, then flew to Buffalo to see a specialist on Monday. Staal said when he was examined on Friday, the MRI showed something in his neck, some pressure on his nerves, that could possibly be affecting him so a cortisone shot was prescribed. He was told to remain off the ice for at least 48 hours after the shot.
So that's why he hasn't been skating this week and probably why Sather made some comments about how they aren't sure it's concussion symptoms, etc. Guessing that everyone is hoping that relieving the pressure in his neck will let him practice without getting headaches

They have been telling everyone the "worst-case scenario". If its not PCS than a pinched nerve isn't as serious right?

This is a Crosby situation. He'll be out for awhile. Good thing is he may be back for the playoffs.

Getting a little ahead of ourselves dont you think? This is still a deep team without Staal, but I mean he is definitly not replaceable for what he brings to our team. I think the East is realllll deep this year and the standings will be much closer than the average fan realizes.

The whole handling of this Staal situation has been a stain on an otherwise great offseason. Why did we hear nothing about this until training camp? The team was looking so solid and then one day, we get a tweet or something and by the way, the best defenseman on the team by a wide, wide margin is out indefinitely.

Then what, two days ago, Slats is saying he might be on a plane to Europe and then today he's at Whale practice but he's still not cleared for contact and he's also not in game shape. Geez.

I dunno, not really a surprise we didn't hear about it. They didn't know for sure until after the season was over and then wanted to wait and see if he got better

He still might be on plane to Europe as well

They've been giving out minimal information but they're not exactly obligated to tell the fans everything in these situations

Probably, but the other extreme is how the organization and fans have been acting like it's no big deal. With head/concussion issues it's always a big deal. I said from the get go I didn't believe any of it. I'm still perplexed as to why he's skating or doing anything. To me the more they keep ***** footing around with it the more damage this is going to cause.

Sit the guy down for a few weeks. Maybe he can be back by November. His career with our organization is much more important than a dozen or so games.

Why would we make a move for a minor d-man when we already have minor d-men in camp who have been competing for spots?

Torts is big on players knowing the system, and these guys have at least been learning it/practicing it all training camp.

Makes no sense to me to make a move unless it's a legitimate upgrade.

Del Zotto will be on this team, and Erixon, while not deserving of yet, might get a shot as well. Bell is there and might get it over him to be honest.

Either way I think the team will try and get by with what's here for now.

It didn't seem to be an issue until the season was over for Staal. At that point all the players go their seperate ways and the beat reporters go on vacation. How were we supposed to find out?

You expect Torts to call the press and let them know he's been talking to Staal and he's suffering from potential PCS? Keep dreaming.

Better to be careful early in the season, than regretful later in the season.

Let him embark on a rigorous recovery program/therapy even if it takes months.

Gotta take your time with this. Let him come back in top physical condition sometime in december.

If the thing in his neck is serious the guy needs a chiropractor and maybe even surgery. That's what's causing the dizziness/headaches after movement etc.
