Well it has been speculated that Philly would move to the Southeast after Winnipeg leave because they are the closest (in the East) geographically.

If they do what that 4thperiod article speculated and move Boston, Montreal, and Ottawa to the Atlantic it would be an insanely awesome division in terms of rivalries.

A bit off topic, but I have wondered for some time why places like Kansas City is brought up when there is talk of expansion, but I've never heard Houston mentioned (I don't think I have at least... I don't pay too much attention to these things). It's a big, big city (top 5 in the US?) and hockey is turning out to be pretty big in Texas as far as I've understood. No local investors interested?

AEG (Anschütz) built the Sprint Center in Kansas City and don't have a team playing there. They've been the frontrunners for the Penguins before they got their new arena.

How about a new way to think of it, with the following 4 divisions (assuming Phoenix moves to Quebec):

Canada - Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec

Northeast - Boston, Buffalo, NYR, NYI, NJD, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh

West - San Jose, Anaheim, Los Angeles, Colorado, Dallas, St. Louis, Minnesota

South/Central - Washington, Carolina, Florida, Tampa Bay, Nashville, Detroit, Columbus, Chicago

Western:

Pacific: Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipg, Colorado, Anaheim, San Jose, Los Angeles (8)

Central: Minnesota, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Toronto, Ottawa (7)

Eastern:

North East: Quebec, Montreal, Boston, NYR, NYI, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington (8)

South East: Dallas, St. Louis, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida, Carolina, Columbus (7)

Geographically really great. Everyone would laugh at South East division, though.

If we forget the 8,7/8,7 option, how do you think this would work? Almost no travelling over the timezones. I'd like to hear your pros and cons. (I'm posting this here cuz i'm still a rookie and can't start a new thread)

VAN, LA, ANA, SJ, PHX
WIN, EDM, CGY, COL, DAL
DET, CHI, STL, CBJ, MIN
NSH, TB, FLA, CAR, WSH
MTL, BOS, BUF, OTT, TOR
PHI, PIT, NYR, NJ, NYI

That's what I would like to see, but since the Red Wings are pushing hard to get into the East, I don't think it will happen. The Predators are probably #3 on the waiting list behind Detroit and Columbus.

What you posted is the best option, IMO.

I always thought an NL/AL type thing would be cool instead of East/West.

NL East: NYR PHI WSH NJD FLA

NL Central: MTL TOR PITT DET CHI

NL West: LAK SJS CGY WPG COL

AL East: BUF NYI BOS CAR TBL

AL Central: STL NSH CLB MIN OTT

AL West: EDM VAN ANA PHX DAL

Something like that. They obviously could pick different names for the leagues...but you get the idea. Not sure if that's plausible tho.

I don't think a major re-alignment will happen. I think it's just going to be a 1-for-1 switch. At least it seems that a bunch of teams want to move East so there won't be any real potential arguments like a while back when they tried to move the Cubs to the west in baseball.

Here's another option that gives Detroit their way (although, I disagree they should be the team to move. I never realized how east Nashville was until I toyed with this idea).

VAN, LA, ANA, SJ, PHX
WIN, EDM, CGY, COL, DAL
NSH, CHI, STL, CBJ, MIN
PIT, TB, FLA, CAR, WSH
MTL, DET, BUF, OTT, TOR
BOS, PIT, NYR, NJ, NYI

tl;dr: WIN to the NW, DET to the NE, PIT to the SE, BOS to the ATL.

It would be wicked to see Crosby and Ovie in the same division.

No divisions. 58 games with each team playing the 29 others once at home and once away.

Too easy?

There should be a BCS-type system as well.

I miss the old division names. You had to be a hockey fan just to figure out who was in your division.

If we are talking expansion don't be surprised if Vegas gets a team. Lots of corporate sponsorships, and a willing owner in Jerry Bruckheimer also the fact that it would be the only team in town what's not to like?

The upper section should have slot machines, with TVs of the arena feed on them, infront of each seat

This is a mind f

I just tried to map something out...there will be teams getting screwed. The western conference would have to shrink to please the fringe teams, but the WC doesn't want to lose DET and CHI. It would be easier if they got rid of FLA and another EC team and moved them to Seattle, KC, or whatever.

The major issue that some pro-Bettman people are forgetting (or more accurately, choose not to acknowledge) is that no one knows where the Coyotes are playing next year. They can make temporary arrangements if they're in line for Kansas City/Seattle/Portland/somewhere out West, but the whole ball game changes if they move to Quebec.

I don't think it's a terrible idea to go 16 teams in the Eastern Conference and 14 in the West. Baseball has had an imbalanced league setup for a few years and nobody really cares. The NHL has been fairly good at thinking outside the box lately, so it could happen.

As long as the Atlantic Division is left untouched, I don't care what happens. I think Nashville would make the most sense to go east and put them in the Southeast. Make it a pretty easy 1-1 switch for the 'Peg.

And that's supposed to be changing in a year or two, with Houston joining the AL West.

That's why most competent people would have a Plan A and a Plan B. Bettman doesn't seem to have that. I wonder why?

You'd think so. The way it was handled for this season was ridiculous. They released the schedule in June, and spent the 6 weeks before that saying "there's not enough time to re-align." Officially.

When the Nordiques moved to Colorado, it wasn't done "officially" until July, and they still found time to re-align and make the schedule.

When the Whalers moved to Carolina, it was in August, they waited to re-align, but the schedule was fine.
