The funniest part are people who think Chimera is this gritty, fantastic glue guy who aren't wondering why such a player would have to take a paycut on a team that pays pretty much EVERYONE more than they deserve.

Grade A Chimera ball-washing by Boudreau in today's presser.

I bet those people think Chimera gave the team a discount. Just the same way that people who think he is easily replaceable feel that the team overpaid. You know what they say about opinions.....

your Redskins grouchiness is sepping into your Caps fandom. LOL.

This signing is fine. 1.75m for a solid NHL citizen, who knows the team and the room. It makes sense, and probably brings more foundation to the locker room.

This is good. Not great, but not bad either.

Compared to Laich it's a great signing though. Face it, he brings about half the team speed and forecheck and (literally) drives goalies into insanity in the playoffs. Who give a crap that he's a 10-15 guy in the regular season?

Alzner deserve less than 1.28? Vokoun deserve less than 1.5?

There's a reason Chimera wears a letter. And has worn the C in pre-season games where Ovie hasn't played.

Obviously pointed out is the flexibility of some players (Laich, Eakin, Kuznetsov) and the contract status of others (Semin, Knuble). But beyond that, I think the real idea McPhee is sending is that prospects aren't going to be handed spots anymore, they're going to have to knock out incumbents. Part of the new phase of "win now" logic that this past off-season seems to have used. More Alzners, fewer Carlsons and Johanssons.

Asham is an 8-10 minutes a game 4th liner. He can't play anywhere else but on the 4th line. If you asked him to play Chimera's 13-14 minutes a game the results wouldn't be pretty.

If Chimera ends up just being a 10 minutes a game 4th liner then maybe we would be talking about comparable players but until then that is a complete apples to oranges comparison.

Chimera is a 4th line player too. The results of his 13 minutes per game aren't pretty. Just because he does it doesn't make him a 3rd liner. Just because Semin plays on the 2nd line doesn't make him a 2nd line player. Just because Morrisonnnnnn skated 18 minutes for us doesn't make him a top four defenseman.

I'd wager they wind up around the same level of offensive production this year. Asham will do it in less time. He'll be more of a physical presence and he'll be better defensively.

Yes depending on how everyone lines up to start the season Chimera is the Caps' likely 4th liner but he will end up playing up and down the lineup in a bunch of different roles. His speed and forechecking can bring something to every line as well as the PK and Boudreau uses him that way. That versatility brings value.

Asham has better hands, which isn't saying much, and is willing to drop the gloves when needed, but 8 to 10 4th line minutes is the only role he can play.

I'll say it again, if the additions of Ward and Brouwer results in Chimera only playing 10 minutes a game this season then this comparison might make sense but until then...
