Disagree, Mikkelsson is pretty much a first rounder who is NHL ready. What are the odds a third rounder turns out to be that?
1) No matter how you look at it.
Boyes@ 4.0M for 1 yr >>>> Stajan @ 3.5 for 3 yrs.

And Boyes can actually play.

2) Doesnt matter where you were picked. Pelect was a 1st rounder too. What make you think that Mikkelsson is now worth something after the Flames pretty much got him for nothing? BTW, he is lucky to be a 7th dman for this Flames if he makes it at all.

a 3rd rounder means hope, that makes it better than any boderline NHLer. A 3rd rounder gets you a much better player.

What I would like to see, not what we will:

CALGARY:

Kiprusoff (54 starts), Karlsson (28 starts)

Hannan/Bouwmeester
Giordano/Babchuk
Butler/Carson
Sarich

Tanguay/Stajan/Iginla
Hagman/Jokinen/Stempniak
Bourque/Backlund/Moss
Glencross/Byron/Jackman
Morrison/Kostopoulos

ABBOTSFORD:

Irving/Ortio

Wilson/Mikkelson
Smith/Brodie
Breen/Negrin
Piskula

Bancks/Walter/Nemisz
Bouma/Wahl/Howse
MacMillan/Horak/Desbiens
Letourneau-Leblond/Patterson/Cameron
Meyer/Ivanans

ECHL:

Grantham/Henry

I'll get roasted for Stajan and Hagman but if anyone wants to trade them their value has to go up, buy low sell high.

With a couple weeks until camp, I'd be looking for something like this to start the season

Tanguay - Backlund - Iginla
Bourque - Jokinen - Stempniak
Hagman -Stajan - Glencross
Jackman - Moss - Kostopoulos
x - P3L
IR - Morrison, Ivanans

Hannan - Bouwmeester
Giordano - Sarich
Babchuk - Butler
x - Carson

This, but switch Glenny with Stempniak and were good.

Seeing this makes me realize we have too many guys. There's no room for Byron or any other forward prospects. Mikkelson is #8 on the depth chart so there's definitely no room for any defense prospects.

Hagman on the 2nd line? Stajan as the #1 Center? Glencross on the bottom line? Byron on the 4th line, but Bmo as a scratch? wow... with this, we might get a top 5 pick after all.

Tanguay - Backlund/Bmo- Iginla
Glencross - Jokinen - Moss
Stempniak - Stajan/Backlund - Bourque
Kostopoulos - Bmo/Stajan - Jackman
Extra: Hagman, Byron, Nemisz

As for the defense, I have no idea. Chances are we'll see them jumping around quite a bit to see what works, since Reggie is gone.

Now that Preseason is over I see this for opening night:

Tanguay-Backlund-Iginla
Glencross-Jokinen-Moss
Bourque / Stempniak-Horak-Stempniak / Bourque
Hagman-Stajan-Jackman (If he is healthy) / Kostopolous

Extra: PL3

Bouwmeester-Butler
Giordano-Sarich
Hannan-Babchuk

Extra: Smith

Kipper
Hank

Sounds like Morrison and Carson will not be ready for opening night.

EDIT: I really feel that one of Stajan or Hagman has to go. Our 4th line should look like this. Kosto - Morrison / Stajan - Jackman. Sorry to Hagman, but he is the odd man out IMO. Not 4th line material, and Stempniak will be better if he stays healthy.

I really like these line-ups. Hopefully Kipper can stay under 62 starts so Hank can have some time in net to keep Kipper rested. I really am starting to like Stajans compete levels this pre-season as well.

Stajan over Hagman for a number of different reasons, IMO at least

Just too many wingers and he is an easier contract to move. He also just had a good preseason. Getting a 3rd rounder back would be nice, maybe the value is too high? I'm not sure.

I agree, Hank's better then his record indicated last year IMO. He should be able to handle close to 20 games.

I enjoy that the team also plays well in front of Hank, unlike McE. Most nights they actually looked like they cared to win when we were playing.

Here's my opening night roster lineup:

Tangs-Backlund-Iginla
Moss-Jokinen-Glencross
Stempniak-Horak-Bourque
Hagman-Stajan-Jackman

Honestly, I realize there are other with way more top end talent, but that might just be the deepest 1-4 lines in the NHL. Seriously, our 3rd and 4th lines have the potential to eat the other teams bottom 6 up, that is how we are going to win the majority of our games this year.

If guys like Hagman, Stajan, and Stempniak can turn it around, then yes. If they struggle and underperform, it's going to be a looong season. Glad to see I'm not the only person who wants the OMG line to stick together.

If Bourque get his 55-60 points, and Stempniak puts up 20+ goals, which will likely happen with Morrison returning, I think all those situations are very likely. Also, with our roster depth, we really do not have a 4th line. I wouldn't necessarily number the lines, which minutes lines are getting is more important. I think whatever line is performing the best on a given night will see icetime. All lines can score and put up points.

I agree with all of this. Last night Moss, Jokinen & Glencross was getting top line minutes, and although it was the preseason, they got top-line points on the board. I think a third line of Stempniak-Stajan-Bourque (my "3rd" line) could put solid numbers too if given good ice time. And it might be realistic that Hagman-Horak-Jackman puts up 30-45 goals together, so give them ice time too.

The latter end of last season had all 4 lines sharing/fighting-for ice time and we saw tons of goals from all 4 lines

Bouwmeester at center did not work in pre-season, its not going to work during the regular season.

I really think Hagman is a new player. I was at the game last night, and there were many things that I saw that people on TV wouldnt really be able to see. He is fast, like super fast now, and still has great hands. Hagman will do well for us this year I think.

Also, you gotta feel for Stajan, he works his ass off every night, he just can't get anything done. I really hope to see him turn it around.

I'm pretty sure it was used during the latter part last season as well. I agree with the concept of having a big body in front of the goalie, so maybe Moss could be swapped with JayBow

If Stajan used the same training regime as Hagman this offseason, I'd be more inclined to give him more minutes. Stajan's passing upside, and the way he sees the ice, would fit nicely between two skilled shooters like Stempniak and Borque. But Stajan needs to be faster to make plays. I also think that big hit on him last year was detremental to his game and the way he played.

Watching from the dome vs the Coyotes

Stajan played great; did all the little things and was winning zones faceoffs clean. He was very solid on the pk and able to get some pucks on net. Only thing I didn't like was he got soft/cute on the puck a couple times (one of which ended in him getting hit pretty hard); but that was probably half to do with bad ice / pre-season compete level. Not really fit for a top 6 role but he'll be a positive for this team as a 3rd/4th centre.

Still loving Horak gets his stick on everything just needs some more muscle to force all those to the net or out of the zone.

Backlund/Hagman looked like star players all night obviously not the best competition but they alone created tons of scoring chances and a clean power-play face-off win got Backlund an assist.

O-M-G line plays great they got cute a bit and would send no-look passes into the corner with no one there; but for the most part they were flying. Joker needs to be better in the dot though...

Steps was great made a couple big plays each period lots to be impressed with.

Byron didn't have a bad game but I didn't see much other than his speed that would make me want him on this team over a guy like Horak

Bouma wasn't bad, but didn't seem to be a good fit beside Hags and Backlund. Just wasn't keeping up.

TK was another small notch down was hoping he'd be a easy in on the bottom line but we have better players that could be forced there and he might be the odd man out ...especially when Tim comes back.

Good on Desbiens for fighting a guy he couldn't really handle and getting back up to get punched a few more times. I hope PLL and him play a combined 2 or less regular season games for us, just not NHL level players.

Tanguay-Backlund-Iginla
Glencross-Jokinen-Moss
Stempniak-Stajan-Bourque
Hagman-Horak-Jackman
Kostopolous

What a stacked offense, up and down each forward position. There's 8 or 9 guys who have or have the potential to score 20 goals. Even the fourth line has scoring ability with Hagman, Horak, and Jackman.
