i bought a new away jersey couple months ago and left it blank and i wanna put a player on.... i was thinking about turgeon would that be a fail lol or should i go with a more safer player like nino, streit, or grabs?
Only jersey I have that fits me is Sillinger, haha. What can I say, I loved the effort, and admire journeymen who can come in and carve out a nice role for themselves. I really liked the 06-07 team...from the "circus" beginning with the management stuff to the Dubie pokecheck ending...and the Sillinger, Hunter, Hilbert line that year was probably the hardest-working one in hockey.
For the original question...there are usually two types of Isles fans...those that were alive for and remember the dynasty and those that weren't. For the ones that weren't, the 93 team is the pinnacle for them, and Turgeon was the superstar of that team. No way you can go wrong there. If that team and that player defines the most positive time for you as an Isles fan, go for it. That said, hopefully we have similar years and better ahead of us with this new crop...so if you buy into this rebuild, go for one of the core pieces.
Go for it. Honestly, what it boils down to is A-its your jersey, 2-its a player you like(d) & D-who cares what other people think.
Its off topic, but I used to worry so much about other peoples opinions...then I got(& beat!) cancer. It changes the way u approach life. Don't sweat what people say, esp on a message board. Yea I value people opinions on certain topics, but when it comes to my own personal stuff, it doesn't matter.
What I'm getting at is...get the Turgeon jerz. You obviously want it, so do it! He was silky smooth & such a beast in his short time here.
This is coming from a guy who has a Bergenheim jersey my ex got me. Gonna swap the 2's for 4's & change the name.
I would say getting Turgeon would be a foul, only because its a new jersey. If you get a new player, make sure you don't put a 40th patch if the Reebok symbol on the back of the neck is the symbol and not "Reebok" written out. That would also be a jersey foul.
There are no fails this year when it comes to a guy like Turgeon because the Islanders are celebrating their 40th anniversary and those guys will be there at the coliseum. They will probably get jerseys with the 40th anniversary patch and since they have nights where they honor guys like Turgeon that takes care of the fail.
the only thing worse than an old school player on a new jersey (that he never wore) are jersey's of players who never even were part of a franchise.....
i saw a guy w/a MTL Brodeur jersey who swore that he would be traded to the Habs at a point in his career. So far, he's been wrong.
I've already had hundreds of Tavares Leafs jerseys made to sell on ebay. It's only a matter of time, right?
I saw a guy a year or two ago with a Kevin Colley jersey. I thought that was pretty cool so I went and struck up a conversation with him and his reasoning was "It's the least I could do for the guy." Always thought that was pretty cool.
I have no problem having the jersey of a player no longer with the team. Actually, I think it's pretty cool. Shows that you're not a bandwagoner, not that we really have to worry about that. But I think that the jersey should be the style worn when they were with the team -- just my opinion.
If you're worried about "looking out of place" with the new jersey and the name of a player from past era's, I would go with Denis Potvin or a Nystrom jersey. If I am not mistaking Gillies, Trottier, Bossy came after they changed the style of jersey to the stanley cup ones.
