With Erixon going down, the possibility of both Avery & Christensen making the team becomes a possibility. Not sure if this is the plan though...
Gotta figure that Bickel (or Bell/Eminger) is sent down when Staal returns - making for the following team:

FORWARDS
Wojtek Wolski ($3.800m) / Brad Richards ($6.666m) / Marian Gaborik ($7.500m)
Brandon Dubinsky ($4.200m) / Artem Anisimov ($1.875m) / Ryan Callahan ($4.275m)

DEFENSEMEN

Ryan McDonagh ($1.300m) / Mike Sauer ($1.250m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.087m) / Steve Eminger ($0.800m)
Brendan Bell ($0.750m) ??? League minimum $525.000 / Stu Bickel ($0.600m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m)
Martin Biron ($0.875m)

BUYOUTS
Chris Drury ($3.716m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY (Todd White )
$527,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $64,285,334; BONUSES: $1,487,500
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $14,666 + the 8th defensemans salary that will be sent down

Tight fit - but plausible. Maybe they work on a trade a bit into the season instead after showcasing a few pieces and seeing how things work out?

Callups FWD
Newbury, Mitchell, Hagelin, Weise, Bourque
No particular order

Callups D
Erixon, Parlett, Bell/Bickel, Valentenko

They won't keep both Avery and Christensen, as they have to plan for the event that Erixon is called up.

I am certain it'll be Bickel that they send down, making Bell the 7th dman and Eminger the starting 3rd pair RD, like I figured.

So we'll be running

McDonagh
Del Zotto
Bell

down the left side until Staal returns. The big news here is that Del Zotto has made the team. No rookies will make it.

Honestly, no surprises.

The guys who deserved to stay based on their play got spots; those who didn't got demoted. This is the way a camp should be run - at least as regards anyone not completely entrenched as a veteran leader.

I hope that the guys who got demoted take this the right way. While it's always discouraging to get cut, hopefully they understand that it's rare that you get a guy like Stepan last year who just steps in and grabs a spot with no minor league experience. They need to look to the examples of Callahan and McDonagh for inspiration and force the team to call them up / be ready to step in when injuries occur.

Leaves me a little concerned about our D corps, though. When healthy, Eminger is still in the starting lineup. Erixon and Parlett better start making progress soon!

I'd really like to see a deal made for another defender...probably for EC, then we could send down Bickell... right now our D isn't making me feel very confident.

Avery has outplayed Christensen by a large margin this preseason.

Maybe they should save Staal the stress of coming over to Europe, go with what they have, and see whats going on with him once they're back in N.A.

Christensen + for Carkner
Bickel to Hartford now & Bell to Hartford when Staal returns. Or one of them stays and Eminger is waived/sent down?

Easy

3 D fighting for 6th and 7th spots... Eminger, Bell and Bickel... love it! People need to remain objective about the #6 and #7 D, in terms of skill and fitting under the cap in todays NHL... This is not EA Sports NHL 98, where you'd have Pronger and Leetch as your #5 and #6 and get away with it...

Torts seems to like Bickel (6-4 and mean), Bell too (had a good camp)... nothing much coming out on Eminger, except that he assisted on NJ's OT winner...

I don't think Weise will be claimed, that doesn't happen that often and Weise really isn't all that special.

As for Christensen still being there: I agree that he hasn't done much, but then again neither have the others apart from maybe Bourque. And he is better off getting playing time in the AHL.

agreed it's obviously an option alla McD if he can produce in CT.

does Montreal still want EC according to rumours that are likely BS :-)

Wouldn't mind this at all.

And I am objective as to what we can do with the 6th7th spots and the cap. Honestly, MDZ is a 6th guy this season and Eminger should be a 7th like last year. That's under 1.5m combined salary. I'm not expecting us to spend more than that - but to have MDZ/Eminger getting 20 mins a night and Bickell/Bell getting 10, that's half a game of really leaky defense...mistakes will be made with that many minutes and goals will be scored...not even Hank can save us from that.

Oh and it's actually more than that since I doubt McD/Girardi are going to play 30 mins a night.

there is no way he should fly for these 2 games. it could make things worse. After these two games we have another week before we play again. He should stay at home.

It's sad that McCabe actually would be an improvement over Bell and Bickel although I am sure he would cost too much and he doesnt really make sense as a 3rd pairing partner with DZ. Too similar

Carkner would make alot of sense though. Getter done. Sens have too many Dmen and Rangers have too many F

you're exactly right regarding the bottom D. The modern NHL means cap sacrifices - some teams go with low paid G's, we're going with weakish bottom D

Would someone like McCabe play for a low dollar amount for 1 year - doubt it. Signing vet D men has problems for years 2/3 of contracts, when the vet D men are even more vet and even less useful.

We have a strategy that is all about what happens 2-3 years from now when Erixon and Kreider are ready.... let some young guys get games. Let's see how they develop, and let's not get ourselves into contracts that we won't allow us flexibility for the important cup run years in 2 years or so.

On the defenseman sent down:

Erixon--needs to be more physical. He took a number of tripping penalties--some of them not necessary. He could be a player who comes up mid season like McDonagh last year and solidifies a spot. Of all the players sent down he's the closest to being a legit core player for the Rangers.

Parlett--needs to be more physical as well. He's another cerebral guy with good puck skills. There are not that many Lidstrom's around who get away with just positioning and skill.

McIlrath--I think he a very good camp and is not as far away as some here would have you think. Needs more maturing though--needs to get better with the puck but he's only 19. I think he has a future. He did go for a skate on a play yesterday. Pinching in and the puck was already going up the ice in the direction.

Bourque--at best with the other forwards we have he would be a 4th liner/spare. He's a kid and he needs ice time. The AHL is the best place for him to be at this point.

Hagelin--didn't outplay the vets. Showed a lot of speed and is good defensively but on the offense he did not do a lot.

Mitchell,Newbury--I like quite a lot. Both in their 20's but not really kids and they both have quite a bit of NHL experience but they're both bottom line/spare types. Both know the score--they're nice to have around to call up.

Weise--needs a bit more consistency. Again did not outplay the vets. He seems closer but if and when the opportunity comes around again he is really going to have to grab it.

McCabe's issues are skating. Playing a regular shift I'd prefer trying my luck with Bell or Bickel.

That being said--McCabe playing point on the pwp with Richards would be an interesting experiment IMO. McCabe's passing skills and shot--which has velocity and accuracy--Richards ability to set that up. I could see doing that for that reason but I'd be using McCabe very sparingly otherwise.

At this point, if it's Christensen hanging around over Avery, well...I don't know.

No chance has Christensen earned it over Avery so far this preseason.

Happy for DZ, although I wasn't too impressed with him this preseason either.

So opening night is essentially set for the forwards...

Wolski - Richards - Gaborik
Dubinksy - Anisimov - Callahan
Fedotenko - Stepan - Zuccarello
Rupp - Boyle - Prust

No rookies. When's the last time no rookie cracked the forward corp out of preseason?

LOL still a pretty young team with a lot of homegrown players in the lineup.

I really, really liked Hagelin's game. I think if Zucc struggles Hagelin/Bourque will be knocking at the door. Loved both in traverse city and preseason.

I'm somewhat surprised/upset Erixon did not make it. But it is what it is, and it won't hurt him going the McDonagh route.

I think hes looked alright. Not as good as Avery, but decent.

If it comes down to a matter of cap hits, i'll understand. Still think Avery can help this team more.
