not a chance. he's only ever wanted to play in the NHL and for the Rangers. he didnt sign with Calgary because they suck and who'd want to live in Calgary when you can swing it to live in NYC

- and there's no doubt that he will crack the NHL. probably by season's end.

I was really hoping Erixon would step up to prove himself as a competent NHL defenseman. Without him, our blue line seems weak. Suddenly we have a lot of questions:

1. Staal's concussion
2. Sauer is midly injured and only a sophomore.
3. McDonagh has only half a season of NHL experience.
4. Will Girardi be as good as last year?
5. Will MDZ play better defensively while being able to help the offense?
6. Will Eminger or Bell be able to competently take third pair shift, night in and night out, without being a detriment?

Not only do we need a veteran defensemen -- we need a very capable impact veteran. This is why I wanted a d-men over the summer along w/ richards.

the season is 80+ games long. we dont need to panic and get some vet D in. Let's see how the guys we are developing pan out. We can always make a trade down the road. Nobody is available right now who is of any use.

between avery and ec, the only reason to keep EC is that he makes less $$ and it saves us a $1 mil in cap space which could possibly be used later to get help.

cap hit aside though, its not even close. avery has been much better in preseason and it also gives us the much better option of being able to insert avery in place of mza on certain nights that we think we need some more toughness

no. he makes less than $105k in the ahl so doesn't need to go thru re-entry waivers

taking it from a more positive spin...i think bourque did a lot to show he belongs at the top of the depth chart and considered for future call up. it is as much about the positive bourque showed as hagelin not

Every point counts. Two points got the Rangers in the playoffs last year.

Wow good point! Why doesn't every prospect demand a trade to the NHL?!?!? Better yet why does Calgary even have prospects?

Do they?

Learn something new every day.

Erixon made it pretty clear he wanted to be a ranger. His trade here was no coincidence.

This isn't about panicking. Considering half the league expects us to be an upper echelon team...a top 5-top 6 team, a veteran D-men would be needed to stabilize the back end. This is a far too young of a defensive group going in. And the older ones are beyond mediocre. There's youth and then there's youth.

If really Sauer and Staal were that big of a question mark, Tortorella would have added something. After last season, we can trust him when it comes to defense.

good points. but this discussion reminds me of last year when we were all panicking that our D was too young. I guess i'm not worried too much about results this year. I'd rather see development as cup runs should be in the offing over the next 2-3 years.

Can JAM play RW? Hartford seems to have too many centers, but not enough right wings. He shoots right, so can he play RW?

Also, Wolf Pack (The Whale my butt) seems loaded this year.

The problem is what is there to really add out there? The good names will probably be costful and the ones available might not be that big of an upgrade if at all.

adding a dman over the summer would have been nice...ESPECIALLY if they knew about staal's headaches. but the problem is with what cap space? most of the top dmen that were available got severally overpaid and have big cap hits.

would the smart move have been to trade for liles and then get rid of avery & mza to clear cap space?? maybe it would have been

I don't know, he kept playing Gilroy over Eminger.

I am thinking of doing this also. If he gets going, him in addition to Brad Richards would mean big things for our power play and offense.

If you watch yesterday's game closely you will that Hagelin made a few very good passes that didn't turn into goals. He's a keeper.
