why is your mascot a dragon? Don't get me wrong, the thing looks awesome and would kill Youppi! but... what the hell? What's the reasoning behind this?

Because Wang also owned an AFL (Arena Football League) team that played at the NVMC. They were called the Dragons and their mascot was Sparky the dragon. After a few years the powers that be decided to have Sparky come to Islanders games for the kids. And that's how Sparky became our mascot.

it is because there was an Arena Football team that Wang owned as well called the new york dragons and they played at NVMC. So he tried to incorporate both teams to get more people interested in arena football. The only problem is that the team and the league folded and now they were stuck with a crappy mascot that no one understands unless your a islanders fan.

We have a dragon because of the 'ladies' on Terrace Avenue. They're draggin', so it's a local theme?

Most people don't know the real story about the Dragon of Long Island. In the 1700's a Revolutionary War soldier encountered a dragonlike creature in what was later to become Uniondale. The Dragonlike creature had claws that resembled hockey sticks. The natives called this creature Sparkius. Thus the reason for the Islanders mascot.

I think dragons are good luck in Chinese culture and the Islanders owner has chinese heritage so it makes sense on that level too.
