Assuming Pronger is back, Lilja will get ice time with Meszaros, as will Bartulis. Let them fight it out for 6 vs 7. Send Gus back to work on his D.

Only the first goal may have been his fault. The second was a difficult situation with the 2 on 1 down low.

1st goal, more so yes than no. 2nd goal is 100% Meszaros's fault.

A recap of a radio interview Sam @ the Inquirer did on WIP (September 28):
  • Discussed the Simmons, Avery situations.
  • Mentioned Jagr and his worth to the powerplay.
  • The locker room has a loose atmosphere and there's more chemistry. Some of the "departed players" were "quiet and distant."
  • This is now Laviolette's team.
  • Schenn will make the team.
  • Discussed the current injuries.
  • Couturier has had a "tremendous" camp but though he (Sam) thinks he (Couturier) probably won't make the opening night roster, it wouldn't be a shock if he (Couturier) did.
  • Matt Read's success.
  • Biggest positives out of the camps include the depth and "promising youth." Something the team lacked last season.
  • Bryzgalov's personality is reminiscent of Bernie Parent's. He predicts Bryzgalov plays about 60 regular season games. Bryzgalov has had a "good not great" camp but made progress in the second pre-season appearance. Bobrovsky's been the best goalie in camp.
  • Pronger. It is his team in the locker room. Holmgren almost guaranteed that Pronger will be available opening night.
  • The defense, with Boston, is 1-2 in the East with a healthy Pronger.
  • Good news stories in camp: Read, Couturier, Rinaldo, Pronger.
  • Predicts the team could struggle to score but the powerplay will be better.
  • Team will be better suited for playoffs. Won't have as many points as last regular season.
  • Talbot, Voracek, Simmonds "real good additions."
  • Feels "very positive" about this season. Mentioned a 4th place finish in the East.

you dont even have to do that

putting Lappy on LTIR & waiving Shelley, replacing them with read and rinaldo gives us $1m in cap space

problem solved

The last time we all played this game and came up with several ways to keep Carter and Richards and sign Bryz, both players were traded.

So Hartnell is probably gone.

The season starts in a week...maybe its just me but I think its kinda retarded to make a trade at this point. Does Paul REALLY like Couturier that much that he wont send him down for 1 f'ing year?

Did anyone notice this?

For their projected line up, Nodl is not there. And even weirder, Gus isn't on there either.

Oh thanks. But still, I'm kind of surprised a little that he's on the bubble. Couturier, even though I'd LOVE him to be here all year, I think an extra year in a lower league to bulk up a bit will do him some good.

Post-preseason camp discussion (October 2)...

http://flyers.nhl.com/club/page.htm?...id=DL|PHI|home

Quote:
The focus now turns to the regular season, and with it the time of year for difficult decisions to be made.

One of those decisions will be whether to keep 18-year-old Sean Couturier.

Couturier has no doubt turned in a very solid camp. His awareness on the ice, emphasis on two-way play and of course bigger frame are all qualities the coaching staff has noticed during his first go at an NHL camp.

He’s even produced numbers on the scoresheet, recording four points (1G-3A) playing in six of the Flyers seven preseason contests.

“I think since Day One I’ve gotten better and better, and I’ve given a good impression, but I can’t control what they’re going to do with me so I don’t really know,” said Couturier.

Entering this week, the Flyers coaching staff and management will dissect and go over the camp as a whole, hold meetings and decide what not only what players will make the team’s opening roster, but also what players will be playing on the same lines.

There remains roster spots open, however there are more rookies than the parent club can keep on it’s opening day roster, which needs to be turned into the National Hockey League on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Overall, the Flyers finished their seven-game preseason slate with a record of 4-2-1. They open the 2011-12 season on the road on Thursday, Oct. 6 in Boston against the Bruins (7pm, VERSUS, 94 WIP).

Another opinion, from Daily Times beat writer Anthony J. SanFilippo ...

http://anthonysintheroom.blogspot.com/

Quote:
A GUESS AT THE FLYERS OPENING ROSTER

Forwards: James Van Riemsdyk, Claude Giroux, Jaromir Jagr, Scott Hartnell, Danny Briere, Jakub Voracek, Matt Read, Sean Couturier, Wayne Simmonds, Zac Rinaldo, Blair Betts, Max Talbot, Jody Shelley.

Defensemen: Chris Pronger, Matt Carle, Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn, Andrej Meszaros, Matt Walker, Andreas Lilja.

Goalies: Ilya Bryzgalov, Sergei Bobrovsky.

-Couturier beats out Brayden Schenn, who was limited in camp by a shoulder injury. Schenn can be sent to the AHL for what would be an extended camp of sorts while Couturier either has to stick or go back to Drummondville of the QMJHL. The Flyers will at least give him nine games, but I'm betting he sticks. The coaches love his maturity.

-Read makes the roster, but could be sent down for one day as the Flyers have to technically carry Ian Laperriere's salary on the roster for the first day before placing him on injured reserve.

- Shelley's salary counts against the cap while he serves a five-game suspension. The Flyers could keep another player in that spot in his place, but the player would have to be inexpensive as they are tight to the salary cap.

-What becomes of Andreas Nodl? Good question. Maybe he's the guy that they were talking with Nashville about.

-Erik Gustafsson can be sent back to the Phantoms with no problem. Oskars Bartulis is a different animal. He has to go through waivers. I'm not sure he makes it. That means the Flyers could try and trade him too. He has value at such a cap-friendly salary ($600,000 for each of the next two seasons).

This roster would leave the Flyers with roughly $755,000 in salary cap space. Not ideal, but manageable.

Article: Schenn ready for opener; Flyers have tough decisions

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inqflyersreport/

Quote:
After he took part in Sunday’s practice in Voorhees, rookie center Brayden Schenn said he is healthy and available to play in Thursday’s opener in Boston.

But are the Flyers ready to put him on their roster?

General manager Paul Holmgren said he probably won’t finalize his decision until Wednesday at 3 p.m., when rosters must be submitted to the NHL.

Schenn, who missed the last two preseason games because of a shoulder injury, has a $3.1 million salary-cap hit. If he starts the season with the AHL Phantoms, the Flyers will have cap space to include a player like defenseman Matt Walker ($1.7 million cap hit) on their roster.

Acquired in the blockbuster summer deal that sent Mike Richards to Los Angeles, Schenn was injured in an exhibition Monday against the New York Rangers.

“It would have been nice to get a couple more games in, but I’m feeling pretty good; it was a faster recovery than I thought,” said Schenn, who later had an ice pack on his left shoulder. “I’m shooting the puck hard and hope it gets better every day. Should be 100 percent coming up here” on Thursday.

Honestly, I'd love for both Schenn and Couturier to be on the team.

EDIT: I do still think we could fit him, unless I'm wrong about this:

Hartnell-Briere-V
JVR-G-Jagr
Couts-Schenn-Simmer
Talbot-Betts-Nodl
Rinaldo

Pronger-Carle
Timonen-Gus
Mez-Coburn
Bartulis/Lilja

As much as I'd like Schenn to start the season, I think it makes sense to send him down to start. That way they can see how Read, Couts, and Nodl look for a few games before making a trade that they may not have to and most of all we won't have to do something crazy like waive Shelley.
