We're screwed.

And what's sad is that I can't take off anymore deadweight contracts to make it work.
That's why I think you'll see Schenn start the season in Glen Falls.

I also think Nodl is a goner.

Here's another issue: On Wednesday someone is going to have to be sent to the Phantoms because the Flyers technically have to carry Ian Laperriere's salary for a day while he is officially put on LTIR.

to me it's pretty obvious that they will start Schenn down in the Ahl.

He might, but Lappy's salary has to be "replaced" within a certain amount of time, and Schenn's number is too high to do that.

Am I the only one who thinks the Talbot signing looks worse and worse? They spent too much for him to play on the 4th line.

Rinaldo will probably end up playing because there's no alternative.

He played what...4-6 minutes a night? He wasn't completely terrible, but he didn't really jump out at me as an NHL caliber player.

Playing well for Rinaldo means not doing anything stupid. There's no way he should make the team over someone like Nodl.

I'm definitely not with you. We needed a guy like Talbot with Lappy done.

of course he can/will. Nodl is a dime a dozen player and I've heard may not even have a roster spot anymore. Rinaldo threw hits, had some good fights, played hard and drew the coaching staffs praise. Nodl is wallpaper, he hasn't improved, skates hard but doesn't do anything when he gets there.

I don't hate Nodl but he just doesn't bring anything and doesn't have any upside. On a cap crunched team the fact that Zac makes almost half what Nodl does is not insignificant either.

If we give Schenn an extra year, this is what we end up with (add Gustafsson and Rinaldo):

Hartnell (4.20) - Briere (6.50) - Voracek (2.25)
vanRiemsdyk (1.65) - Giroux (3.75) - Jagr (3.30)
Read (0.90) - Couturier (1.38) - Simmonds (1.75)
Talbot (1.75) - Betts (0.60) - Nodl (0.85)
Rinaldo (0.54)

Pronger (4.92) - Carle (3.44)
Timonen (6.33) - Coburn (3.20)
Meszaros (4.00) - Gustafsson (0.90)
Lilja (0.74)

Bryzgalov (5.67)
Bobrovsky (1.75)

BONUS PENALTY (1.40)

TOTAL: 61.77
CAP: 64.30
SPACE: 02.53

See bold. You defined Jody Shelley. Or Max Talbot. Or Ian Laperriere. Or Darroll Powe. Or Matt Walker. Or Dan freaking Carcillo.

Zac Rinaldo, by his very definition as an enforcer, is not only a dime a dozen player but is also a member of a dying breed.

What separates the Rinaldos and Shelleys of this world from the Talbots and Laperrieres is defensive play, cool-headedness, smart play, and leadership.

Nodl may not fight, but he throws hits and plays hard, particularly along the walls.

Guess what? He plays decisively, he's cool-headed, and he makes smart plays. No leadership, but he's not exactly a veteran yet.

Nodl is 1000x the NHL player Rinaldo is.

And if you suddenly think Rinaldo has better hands than Nodl because of one nice goal in preseason you're completely off your rocker. Remember Carcillo's nice goals? How much did that do for him exactly?

Nodl is a guaranteed 30 points, smart play, cool-headed play, and defensive abilities.

We have way too many people that should be waived.

I'd rather have Walker if money is no object. Walker is the better player, and Bartulis is more bang-for-your-buck. There is no reason why Lilja has a contract.

Nodl was one of the Flyers best defensive forwards last season. He played against the toughest competition while having the lowest goals against on ice per 60. He is perfectly fine as a bottom 6 forward making less than a mil. He also has more offensive ability than Rinaldo.

As for Rinaldo? Wake me up when fighting and hitting alone wins you hockey games. Rinaldo may be more entertaining, but he does nothing to contribute in any meaningful way.

737k for a 6th/7th defensemen? Was he really that bad in camp?

Not at that price. Nearly $2M for a 4th liner is absurd. Overpaying for intangibles is stupid.
