Blackhawks sign Ray Emery (1 year/$600,000)

per Pierre LeBrun

Hearing that Hawks and Ray Emery are close to agreeing on one-year deal. Still not done but close ...

Somewhat surprising given that Emery did not have a great pre-season from what I saw of him.
EDIT: Confirmed.

I still think Emery is better then some other backups signed this year like Elliot and Conklin

Is it a well known fact that Emery will be the back-up...I haven't seen him play much recently but I snagged Crawford in my hockeypool...

i think his play in anaheim last year is enough to give him a break on a few preseason games.

Emery is SO much better than Elliott. He filled in well for Anaheim and I think Chicago will be thrilled with him. He's a better goalie than anyone on Phoenix or Florida, anyways.

EDIT: Meant Elliott up there, not Conklin. Although Emery is better than Conklin too.

Can't see how much worse then you can get if you watched Elliot play last year. Between him and Budaj it was more of a 'who has the less likely chance of losing this' mindset then a 'who has a better chance of winning this'. They might sound the same, but they're very different if you put them into context of how they played.

They were both sieves on a horrendous team, but i'm just surprised they got signed so fast and Emery who played very well on the Ducks only got a tryout.

Anything over the league minimum on a two-way deal is too much.

He's not a NHL tender anymore. His body just isn't as quick as it used to be, and he doesn't have a solid technical game to fall back on.

Wow. Downgrade on Turco. And that was gonna be tough.

Wtf happened to Salak? The consensus is that he is at least 100x better.

In Cayuga Ontario born and raised
On the hockey rink is where I spent most of my days
All those hockey players taking shots at me
And I shot them right back cos I'm Emery!

Well I'm a goalie so I like to stop pucks
From the Predators to the (Mighty) Ducks
Ain't nobody gonna mess with me
Cos my name is Ray Emery

Emmmmmm-errrrrr-eeeeeeee his name is Emmmmmm-errrr-eee his name is Raaaaay!
And hockey's the name of the game I like to play.

Corey Crawford came up to me
And I said: "Whatcha doin' here Corey C?"
He said "I'm thew goalie in town and I don't mean to make you frown."
I said: "Wait a minute pal that can't be, there's only room here for one goalie, that happens to be me so step aside for RAY EMERY!"

Emmmmmm-errrrrr-eeeeeeee his name is Emmmmmm-errrr-eee his name is Raaaaay!
And hockey's the name of the game I like to play.

Why? It's not like it's going to be an expensive deal.

(Assuming you understand what a two-way contract means)

He's a professional hockey player. That's enough to make him more entitled to a contract than you are.

Glad to see Ray back in the NHL. Hopefully this pans out.

It makes sense. Rockford needs a goalie. If Emery falters, they trade for a goalie, and bring up Salak.

Emery is now the worst player in the NHL AINEC. I just hope they have the sense to cut this guy loose before he costs us a playoff spot. He is not AHL quality anymore.

No disrespect, but you guys don't even have the slightest idea what the hell you are talking about. Emery is lower tier ECHL at this point, and I'm giving him as much praise as I possibly can given his performance and how he looks. If you don't like the Hawks, you should be very, very happy they signed Emery.

BTW- You guys are really disrespecting Elliot by comparing Emery to him and I saw a lot of Elliot last year. His performance last year was epically bad and one of the worst seasons I've seen from a goalie, particularly in Colorado. Nevertheless, Elliot > Emery.

My thoughts exactly. I watched most of the Hawks preseason games and he looked pretty bad.

Conklin on the other hand, played very well considering the AHL team in front of him.

He was good enough last year to make up for it.

He's washed up now and was never that good to begin with. How does he make up for that?

Just because he had a bad preseason doesn't mean he's washed up. He played well down the stretch for Anaheim and I think he'll be more than adequate as a backup to Crawford.
