Winchester signed. 1 year $725k

From Fear The Fin which had included a tweet from Bob McKenzie as reference:

"Nice story unfolding in SJ: looks as tho Brad Winchester, in camp on a PTO, has earned a 4th line spot, pending negotiation of a contract."

Emmons:
LW Brad Winchester also has impressed on his tryout, Doug Wilson said. But they must agree on a contract now.

Considering he has had 2 successive 1-yr deals at $800K, then $700K, it should be a fairly easy negotiation for DW if he wants it to be.

$600-650K for 1 year is about right.

I would expect this to be a pretty one-sided negotiation in our favor. He wants to play more than we NEED him.

Winchester was impressiver during the pre-season. DW should get him signed for a lilttle bit more then the minimum. Good signing, good try out by Brad.

Still perplexed as to why there is so much hate for him. I suppose hes a shoe in to replace Wallin as Whipping Boy.

I don't understand exactly why that's funny.

Did any of you actually go to the pre-season games? He wasn't terrible. He hustled, skated hard, and was noticeable out there.

Watched them on TV, he wasn't any better than Mcginn, in fact, I'd say McGinn was superior for that role.

This is a 4th Line enforcer / 13th forward signing for near league minimum. God aweful signing.... instead of Brad getting KOed by Volpatti I would much rather have Murray, Clowe, or Vandeermeer taking the hits and sitting in the box for 5 minuets.

Not to mention Winchester looks just fine on the 4th line providing physicality and puck possession (its the fourth line so dont think JT puck possession) to a fourth line. Bad bad move by DW!

What was San Jose's motivation for not attempting to resign Ben Eager, but then signing Winchester after a tryout? Just the ~$500k in money saved?

Unfortunately that's where he had the most trouble.

I was stoked when it was announced he was signed as a tryout, but after seeing how he played in the preseason, I'm no where near as stoked.

And in fact bummed he actually landed a roster spot, taking one away from the more deserving Woostah players.

Exactly. People act like we're signing him to be our first line centre for **** sakes.

He brings energy, gives 100% and isn't afraid to fight. He'll take the knocks so Clowe doesn't have too, and will come at 600k. It's not like they can't scratch him in favor of one of the Worcester guys if T-Mac decides he wants them to get some experience.

He's also there for insurance purposes. Say what you want about how good our AHLers have been playing, they're still unproven and for the most part rookies.

No, he's not a great fighter, but he's expendable and is capable and willing to play that role, he isn't a defensive liability and comes very cheap.

That's a good point. I think you're right that money was the deciding factor, although I think if eager hadn't blown up against vancouver in the playoffs he may have a contract right now. He was an amazing forchecker and I know Mclellan loved him.

Winchester is more of a traditional enforcer than Eager (who gets in a surprisingly low amount of fights given his demeanor on the ice), maybe that's what they wanted out of our 13th forward.
