Winchester is more of a traditional enforcer than Eager (who gets in a surprisingly low amount of fights given his demeanor on the ice), maybe that's what they wanted out of our 13th forward.
I'll add that it looked pretty apparant that a lot of the guys on the bench weren't happy with Eager either - Wilson doesn't like having "loose cannons" in the locker room and as much as I liked Eager, he's a bit crazy.

Winchester is known to be a great teammate and a pretty good locker room guy. He's the type of player you want around, whether he's playing or sitting in the press box.

I think the one thing that truly bums some people out about the potential signing was that he was knocked out by someone 4 inches shorter and 20 lbs lighter.

He brings energy, gives 100% and isn't afraid to fight. He'll take the knocks so Clowe doesn't have too, and will come at 600k. It's not like they can't scratch him in favor of one of the Worcester guys if T-Mac decides he wants them to get some experience.

He's also there for insurance purposes. Say what you want about how good our AHLers have been playing, they're still unproven and for the most part rookies.

No, he's not a great fighter, but he's expendable and is capable and willing to play that role, he isn't a defensive liability and comes very cheap.
Please stop with the "not a defensive liability". He is a liability (proven by the numbers), just like Eager and a myriad of others. It's a catch phrase that is frequently misapplied. The only player that the Sharks have for the role that might not be a liability in the future is Mash and Mash is likely a liability at this point as well.

I could easily knock out a guy 4" and 20lb heavier than me. It doesn't take much when you crack someone square on chin, which is actually easier when you're shorter.

why will i not be surprised to see Wilson sign Winchester to a multi-year bloated contract reaching 2 mill? winchester screams wallin and huskins as a forward. wilson can make or break his offseason by this but seriously. dont do it, man ugh

Winchester pretty much knocked himself out when he charged in. I think if he would have protected himself better he wouldn't have been clobbered. No knock on Volpatti because I'm sure hes a tough kid and is obviously a very game competitor.

and we were right, he sucks and eats up a roster spot. i bet you'd feel really smart if this guy ends up putting McGinn on waivers.

I was all for Winchester getting a look in the preseason, and have nothing against the guy really.

But after that one-punch KO, he firmly cemented his position as my top-line whipping boy. I can't wait to blame pretty much everything on him - and i'm not even kidding - he's perfect.

Fourth Line = Role Players as they all suck at playing all aspects of hockey! Winchesters Role = protect the team and dont screw things up for the 5 minuets that your on the ice. Sometimes that includes taking one on the damn chin.

Emmons just said signing will happen today and it's a one year deal. Money not mentioned.

Congrats to Brad Winchester on signing a contract with the Sharks. Welcome to Sharks Territory and good luck this season.

Listening to NHL Home Ice on XM and they just said that they got confirmation from the Sharks about the Winchester signing a few minutes back. Sounds done.

I thought he would be a good signing until I saw him play. Eager -1.0.

So, I think with the roster as is now, Inlcuding Greiss and the other guys on IR the Sharks have about 1.25 million in cap space after this signing. Does that sound about right? That number will be going up when everyone gets healthy cause right now the Sharks are carying 26 players still

Pollok:
Brad Winchester's deal is one-year, $725,000 -- and he's first pro tryout to earn #SJSharks contract in camp since Sandis Ozolinsh in 2007.

Winchester came off as more of an agitator to me than an enforcer. Basically, a cheaper version of Ben Eager.

But less talented and equally as stupid.

Hopefully Ginner outperforms him.

They have to send down two more guys, if one assumes Sateri going down, at this point but with who is still on the roster, the space is actually only 835k depending on what Winchester's actual number is.

But he did get a lot of 5 minute majors. That's like half a fight, right?

And Eager signed a 3 year deal. Glad we have Winchester and also glad it's for only 1 year.
