I've always wondered why these are honestly made public. Guys will be cut, i'd rather the league just show the final rosters after camp. But, do guys on 2 ways count? For some reason I get the impression no. I know of a couple guys who are coming to town but they don't show up on our training camp roster(eventhough they will likely be sent down before the season starts.)
They don't show up because they're not there when camp starts. This is simply a who's here now type thing. Same as the season opening roster and season ending roster aren't the same. Everything is in flux and while you may not see the point of releasing it, there are fans that want to know at least who is in camp even if they don't make the team. Makes watching and forming your own opinion about players easier.
Oh, fyi, I was at the Chicago Express opening training camp event on Saturday, and got a printout of the players currently on roster.
Here's the Express as of 10/1, with their 2010-11 team(s) included:
Shaul, Tom - Toledo Walleye/Florida Everblades/Kalamazoo Wings (ECHL) Defensemen
Burrows, Josh - Bakersfield Condors (ECHL)
Campanale, Matt - New York Islanders, Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL), UNH (NCAA)
Campbell, Darcy - Rio Grande Valley (CHL)
Lehman, Scott - Milwaukee Admirals (AHL), Cincinnati Cyclones (ECHL)
Lutz, Nathan - Mississippi RiverKings (CHL)
Nolan, Ryan - None
Palm, Trent - UMD (NCAA)
Paris, Drew - Toronto Marlies (AHL), Gwinnett Gladiators/Elmira Jackals (ECHL)
Wietecha, Scott - Elmira Jackals (ECHL), Ferris State (NCAA) Forwards
Benz, Chris - Indiana University (ACHA)
Embach, Mike - Texas Stars (AHL), Ferris State (NCAA)
Faubert, Pierre-Luc - Trois-Rivieres Caron & Guay (LNAH)
Freeman, Scott - Victoria Salmon Kings (ECHL), Clarkson (NCAA)
Johnson, Tyler - Colorado College (NCAA)

Tifu, Yannick - Binghampton Senators (AHL), Elmira Jackals (ECHL)
Vermeulen, Travis - Manglerud (Norway)
Additionally, one of the staffers I spoke to mentioned that five players not included above, including a goalie, had been called up to the Springfield Falcons, which explains why they only had one goalie at their first practice. However, midway through a second goalie showed up, and the guy I talked to wasn't sure if he was a new guy or the one that went up to Springfield.
