Actually, that's a very good point.

October 4, 1991: Mark Messier, traded to NY Rangers by Edmonton with future considerations (Jeff Beukeboom for David Shaw, November 12, 1991) for Bernie Nicholls, Steven Rice and Louie DeBrusk and a big, giant bag of cash

Twenty years to the day. Surely, a deal as big is in the works today. Surely. Hopefully Sather makes out better in this (rumored) deal than he did in that one.

What do you mean? The trade happened 20 years ago today.

EDIT: The rest is my attempt at humor on an otherwise tense day.

It lasts for 30 days. The player can be sent down without having to go through waivers in the next 30 days.

The Rangers will not be carrying both Bickel and Bell, or possibly neither once Staal is back. Today is the day to try and slip players through waivers as teams are mainly set by the end of training camp. 20 days into the season a team may have had a serious injury and may take a stab in the dark on either of these players.
Yeah, forgot that momentarily...

I think the Rangers are aware that both players will clear.

Still, they must be working on some stuff, and this is precautionary.

Maybe a better dman gets placed on waivers.

I posted this in the Erixon thread as well....

Here is a thought on Erixon: Staying with the Rangers in Europe, really didn't do him much good as far as learning to play on an North American rink. Maybe the Rangers brass liked what they saw, but wanted him to get more practice/game time on the smaller rink. Now that Bickel and Bell have been waived, maybe Timmy is on the next plane to Stockholm to re-join the Rangers now that they are playing on the smaller rink....

Thoughts?

Possible, but he looked like crap in the preseason so he didn't really earn a spot and I would think that getting comfortable with his teammates would outweigh having to learn to play on a smaller rink.

Look, you are overlooking the OBVIOUS option.

Me. I work in STHLM. I can play D. Slats might have found some old tapes of me playing.

I am ready. Bring it on.

Erixon looked better on the big rings than the smaller rinks...but he didnt look awful...he looked exactly what he is...young and inexperienced. He looked an awful lot like MCD looked last preseason. You can see hes going to be a special kind of player. not elite, but a damn good player that can play 15 years in the NHL, all on 1 team.

Just got a call from Slats. He liked what he saw from me while playing juniors last year. I just signed an ELC for 750k. Ladies and Gentleman, you are talking to your 3rd pairing defensemen

Did we confirm both were waived?

If so, yea, there is something happening, either a trade was made or we picked up someone one the waiver wire. Should be an interesting next few hours with the rumors.

Tortorella clearly does not trust Bell or Bickel. He said he has his reservations on either or both playing Friday.

I wish these "reservations" came about earlier instead of 3 days before the first game. Bickel I don't trust at all, Bell could be OK for a few games.

The Rangers underestimated the situation with Staal and overestimated Erixon's NHL readiness, as he needs some seasoning in the AHL. Hindsight is 20/20 as always, but it's slim pickings for veteran defenseman now. We are in big trouble if Staal misses a substantial amount of time.

None of them would have been better choices than EC, because they're all younger and need to be playing to develop properly. Sitting in the pressbox won't help them do that.

Newbury or Mitchell could have been the spare forward. They are not kids anymore, but I guess it's better those guys are there to keep Hartford competitive, and play with guys like Hagelin and Bourque etc...

Mitchell would have been adequate as a 13th forward option.
