With Avery put on Waivers today we have more $ and could spend it into our defense.
What the D showed in the pre-season was far from impressive and with Marc out for at least 2 games we need another D-Man to play solid in our own zone. But who´s on the market? Any ideas or names for me?
Girardi - Staal (injured atm)
McDonagh - Sauer (day to day)
Bickel / Bell - Del Zotto
God I hope so. I said it in the Staal thread, make an impact move. Do what needs to be done. Claiming guys off waivers as a stop gap isn't always gonna cut it.
You buy cheap and 9 times out of 10 you get cheap.
Bring in somebody who will still have a guaranteed roster spot when Staal comes back.
Easier said than done, as always, but it's not like we don't need it.

For the first time in a while, I agree. Now that this team is close to contending and we have some solid prospects to play around with, I'd love to see a big move for a proven d-man.
So if we were to make a big move.. we have ~2mil of free salary cap right now. It sounds to me as though we'd be having to movie Dubi or Wolski, and I really don't see either happening.

Franson would be a nice pick up, but I'm not sure how he solves the problem of defensive responsibility on the bottom pairing. He's an offensive guy, not a defensive pillar or even a veteran for that matter. Not sure he's what the org would be targeting.
At noon today, two things happened that affected the Rangers. First, it was announced that Dale Weise, who was reassigned to the AHL on Saturday, but had to pass through waivers to get there, was claimed by the Vancouver Canucks. To be honest, I was somewhat surprised that he was reassigned to Connecticut last weekend. [...]

We are perhaps quick to write off players or label them. It is possible he could be a great fit for our D and system. I mean if he's cheap he's worth a shot. Gunnarson would be, by far, the best fit with Del Zotto imo.

Sure he's worth a shot, but I think the point of going out and getting a D-man is to bolster the defense immediately in the absence of Staal. I'm not sure Franson does that. Certainly from an offensive perspective he does, but not a defensive one.
I think the Rangers are looking for a guy who can eat 17-18 minutes a night on the 2nd pairing while McDonagh steps up to the top pairing with Girardi. I like Gunnarsson, but I'm not willing to open my wallet up very much to acquire him.

Agreed with your post. Franson likely comes at a cheap price and could be moved easily imo. His outlet passes are effective and could be useful on the PP as well.
Gunnarson would cost more, but like I said in an earlier thread probably for an offensive prospect. Toronto likely wanting Borque, Hagelin, or Thomas in exchange. Is that a price the Rangers are willing to pay for a bottom pairing D. I doubt it.
