The revelation about Schenns cap hit makes me wonder if Walker may stay up even if he passes waivers.

Yes, Holmgren apparently hinted that he will. They will need to either send Couturier back to juniors or waive Shelley to carry both Schenn and Walker, however.

So Schenn makes $1.71M instead of $3.11M this year if he spends one day in the AHL?

I'm not too concerned about it, but wouldn't you be a little pissed if you were Schenn? Homer just took over a million dollars out of his pocket on what is essentially a technicality. I guess that's why it's called a bonus, but my guess is Schenn was expecting to make the team so he probably assumed he would be getting it.

SO what happens with us waiving Walker, then keeping him? He takes Lappy's place for a game, then Lappy goes LTIR?

Unless Schenn expected to play 25 minutes a night then no, he was never ever going to reach that total. Richards and Carter didn't make 25 minutes a night last year. The only effect this has on Schenn is that he misses the opening night game.

What do you think he cares more about, missing that or helping his cause to stay with the big leagues with half a salary cap hit.

For Couturier to stay up more than nine games, we need to rid ourselves of a contract. It isn't enough just to waive someone. Someone needs to be picked up from the waiver wire, or we need to do some trading where we only get a pick back (or an unsigned player, or some other contract that can slide).

Depending on Schenn's shoulder, this move might also be to let him get up to 100%.

It changes the CAP number because of potential bonuses. To achieve the money he just "lost" he would have had to play more than 25 minutes in ALL 82 games this season. He is actually only making 900k base salary IIRC. The rest is POTENTIAL bonuses that he must still earn to actually get paid.

Schenn wouldn't see 3.11m anyway.

He'd have to average more minutes per game than any other forward in the NHL for every single NHL game this season.

I'm sad to see Betts go, I hope he gets picked up by a good team.

Ah, I didn't realize there was a minutes played stipulation as well. Seems kind of unrealistic for anyone not a defenseman.

And he's not a 3.11m player anyway, and he knows that. Lots of these bonuses are designed to be impossible or absolute best case scenarios for the players. When Schenn signed the contract he had to know there was a good chance that at team would take advantage of that, and frankly he didn't play well enough in the preseason that he should have an absolutely guaranteed NHL spot at this point.

I know. Holmgren believes Betts will be picked up. Columbus is apparently one team that is interested in him. So that would take care of the 50 contract issue if they want to keep Couts with the big club.

Be perfect, betts gets to play in the nhl, we rid a contract, and he is in the west.

Would we be on the hook for half his salary?

Perfect if you don't care about things like killing penalties.

No, only if he is claimed off of re-entry waivers.

Betts was absolutely horrific last postseason. He took 135 faceoffs and won 39%. I know he had a messed up finger or whatever, but there's nothing he's going to bring that Talbot won't. He's an injury prone, aging 4th liner who's had a positive +/- once in his career. His penalty killing abilities have always been overblown and can be replaced. He was effin atrocious on the pk in the playoffs. Talbot, Giroux, and Nodl have all proven they can kill, then you have JVR, Couturier, Schenn, Simmonds, Read in the mix as well.
