Yup I said this in another thread.

Schenn will be on the phantoms roster while he is " rehabbing" his shoulder. Schenn clearly proved in the pre-season that he's here to stay this season with his excellent defensive and PK play.

If he's injured there's no need to send him to AHL. The reason they are doing it is because they can't afford the bonuses that the Kings signed him too. If he plays 25 minutes in all 82 games he gets the bonus, if he's injured he won't play in all 82 games, therefore no need to send him down.

Serious question, could this be considered cap circumvention? If they are sending him down for one game so the kill part of hi scap hit and bring him back for game 2 then are they not in violation of 'icing thier best possible lineup'?

I imagine if he were a regulr player already, or a star in the league and the flyers sent him down to cut the cap then it might be looked into, but all the flyers have to say is he is not quite ready just yet, and it has to be beleived because he is young and banged up

I didn't completely understand this though, first of all it seems like a stupid bonus to even sign, no way would it come true but that's how it works. The other thing though is that does he even need to be sent down? I doubt he plays in all 82 games at that ice time. I don't know how the cap works on a night to night basis but it's a bit of a weird situation that he doesn't get to make his debut on opening night with the Flyers cos of the cap, I'm not sure how much injury has to do with it at all.
Yeah I'm way too optimistic. I agree anything over 40 would be good for Schenn.

Gus should be our 6th dman... lilja was a terrible signing especially because it is a 35+ contract.

900k for a rookie to start or 738k for a veteran shutdown guy. Plus we should all know by now that this is going to be a 3 day cluster-f, and we don't know how much the roster will change by the 2nd game with Lappy being LTIR'd and Schenn possibly coming back up. And after 9 games, theres the chance that Couturier is back in Drummondville.

It may take a couple of weeks into the season before we see the "real" Flyers lineup. Nothing to fret about if someone is missing from your dream roster yet.

Honestly though, if Lilja looks like he has this preseason (or the past few years) the 6th spot will be open up soon. Plus Lilja is a pretty much sure bet of becoming injured. He hasnt played a full season since the 2005-2006 season and that was his only full season. He did have 1 79 game season though.

In other words out of a possible 738 games, he has played in 530. He has missed around 200 games in 9 seasons. Thats an average of 22 games a season.

just a terrible signing.. walker, bart, and gus are all better than this guy...we could have picked someone off waivers or trade if we needed rather than tie our hands to this guy

Holmgren is quoted in Tim P.'s article...

http://www.csnphilly.com/hockey-phil...934&feedID=695

Quote:
The only non-surprise was the Flyers loaning injured Brayden Schenn (shoulder) directly to the Phantoms, where he will start the season. He did not incur physical contact with his shoulder in recent practices with the team.

“At the end of the day, he needs to play a little bit here,” general manager Paul Holmgren said of Schenn, who appeared in four exhibitions. “I don’t know how long that is going to be. He’s healthy now and ready to take part in things. We got to get him playing.”

Schenn’s salary cap hit would have been $3.11 million. Interestingly, as capgeek.com pointed out, if Schenn stays just one day in the minors, his cap hit drops to $1.705 million for this season only because of bonus structure.

The Walker move is curious given that both Holmgren and coach Peter Laviolette were raving about his play both Saturday and even on Tuesday.

Holmgren said there’s still a chance that if Walker clears, he’ll be on the final roster on Wednesday.

What if Bartulis and Walker are both claimed? Who’s the seventh defenseman? Anyone who wants Bartulis has to play a waiver price of more than $26,000 – rather high, actually. Walker’s is a little over $3,000.

“I’ll tell you tomorrow at 12:01 if that’s a question I have to answer,” Holmgren said, adding he has a pretty good sense that both would clear from checking around.

Holmgren admitted all of this has salary cap consequences but wouldn’t get specific on the timing, but it appears he wants to see if anyone clears by noon Wednesday before he has to turn in his final roster for opening day – Thursday in Boston.

Walker’s cap hit is $1.7 million, again, rather high for a seventh defenseman.

“I don’t know what will happen,” Holmgren said. “Obviously, he’s available now. Roster decisions will be made tomorrow. At noon tomorrow we’ll know if they cleared. I wouldn’t read into who’s on waivers. We need to make decisions tomorrow.”
Quote:
Matt Read, Simmonds, Talbot and Claude Giroux all kill penalties. Even Zac Rinaldo, who is expected on the roster, can as well.

Holmgren admitted that Talbot’s flexibility factored into waiving Betts.

Don’t be surprised if this leads to a trade down the road, something Holmgren didn’t entirely discount.

I'm curious, since his cap goes down to 1.705M, wouldn't that mean we could have both Schenn and Couturier on the team with the price of the original Schenn contract? Just a thought.

Yes, especially since hardly any forwards in the league ever play 25 minutes/game, let alone 82 of them...

Best thing is that Schenn won't even reasonably be concerned about the B bonus.

Yes, but he probably does need a game or three with the Phantoms, as a bit of a rehab. And Lappy still need to be on the opening day roster. Once that gets LTIR'd, Schenn could come back up.

Lost in this story is that Harry Z is being sent down and I for one was impressed enough with him in the preseason that I wouldn't complain about him being brought up at some point for a cup of coffee. Good job Harry Z. Although I wasn't a hater I didn't even have him in my top 20 prospects to start the year and I'd now change that to darn near top 12 or so.

who in the LA front office negotiated that contract??? Lombardi/Hextall? Did his agent not see the 25 minutes line?

"Hi paul, it's Hexy, I see you are having cap issues. You know in Schenn's contract, his bonus this year is dependent on him being with the team all 82 games. Send him down for one game and it's cut in half"

What I'm getting at is that I would LOVE to see both on the team this season.

There are plenty of things like this in contracts in all sports. Rod Beck (former closer for the Padres, among other teams) had a clause in his contract that he would have been paid $50k if he STARTS an all-star game. When is the last time a closer started an All-Star game? Haha.

I know this is way off the thread but I would like to see the Flyers trade Schenn for a young stud defenseman. We have enough centers and I think Sean C will be a better all around player. Giroux and Couturier will carry us for years on the top lines and Briere and Talbot are signed for a few years. We need a young stud on the blueline.

This team could be one of the deepest teams, top to bottom in the league.

That assumes Shelley will be waived, though. Any word on if that is possible? Also who would be 7th Defenseman?
