Mara isn't an upgrade.

But we all know Sather has had the ability to pull some trades. Maybe we actually get a respectable top 4 defenseman somehow.

The Rangers underestimated the situation with Staal and overestimated Erixon's NHL readiness, as he needs some seasoning in the AHL. Hindsight is 20/20 as always, but it's slim pickings for veteran defenseman now. We are in big trouble if Staal misses a substantial amount of time.
Possibly, but buried in one of Andrew Gross' blog posts (Rangerrants) was the mention that the organization was aware of Staal's headache problems in August and that the Bell signing was one reaction to the news. But, I guess Bell didn't standout as much as the front office hoped and now they are covering all bases--looking for a trade or (less likely) a waiver wire pickup. In the meantime, as was mentioned earlier, one of them can play on Friday unless they are both claimed (highly unlikely).

If it's going to be more than a stopgap, the organization is going to have to give up someone they don't want to deal. Gotta give to get.

I agree. My brain is already ticking off the list of guys this team might be willing to deal..

Obviously

Dubinsky
Callahan
Gaborik
Richards
Prust
Boyle

are not going anywhere

Girardi
Sauer
McDonagh

aren't going because they are our top 4 which would make any deal to improve the D counter-intuitive.

Rupp and Eminger as recent signings are unlikely to be dealt. I feel the same way about Feds because of his connection with Tortorella.

Wolski and Christensen have little to no trade value. Bell was just waived.

That leaves:

Zuccarello
Del Zotto
Anisimov (Hoping against)

as potential trade bait along with prospects/picks.

As it turns out, seems the Zug game did have an impact after all. It showed Torts that Bickel and Bell are not adequate stopgaps.

Did anyone else notice how bad Eminger looked in pre-season? Staal or a deal. One or the other.

Eminger looked even worse last preseason. It may be he is just a slow starter.

Torts wants to upgrade the defense? Right now we're loaded with bottom paring/borderline NHLers.

So if by upgrade he means bringing in a top 4 d-man, we'll be trading away something of value. Anything less than a top 4 guy wouldn't be considered an "upgrade" over what we have now.

Outside of MDZ I would say:

Eminger
Bickel
Bell

are all borderline NHLers.

And with Staal out, that leaves 3 top-4 defenseman.

McDonagh
Sauer
Girardi

(2) of which are sophomores (McDonagh hasn't even played a full-season yet in the NHL).

No way we bring McCabe back and I doubt Torts suddenly changes his mind about Mara. I almost expect a trade for a veteran who probably is a little overpaid. I could see Sather dealing with Edmonton trying to get Gilbert.

Carolina still has nine defensemen in camp. Paul Maurice has said he knows who his six will be, but isn't saying names yet.

I'm going to throw out a wild guess and say McBain to NYR.

McBain would be amazing, don't know how we could possibly acquire him though as that is probably wishful thinking.

Stepan, maybe Anisimov would get it done. Not saying I'd do that (not sure), but that's what it'd take.

Personally, I would have signed someone a little more proven than Bell. Maybe offer Staios a tryout like the Isles did or sign Campoli. But they took a gamble with Bell, and it seems like it may not work out.

Look, it's very possible Sather's working on something. Tort's has all but said he is. It's Sather, you never know. He might come up with something pretty pedestrian or he might just blow our minds. Happened before.

so burn cap space on spinning wheels? why not burn an asset? what are we stockpiling all these assets for then? I got news for you, not all of these players are going to get their chance to play on the Rangers. Spending assets to get something THAT YOU NEED is not wasteful.

And he looked pretty damn bad the second half of the season too. Let's face it, he's not very fast, he doesn't have good (or even decent) hockey sense, so he's usually close to or out of postion and the more he plays, the lack of consistancy becomes very obvious too. As a 7th defenseman who fills in for 20+ games, he's not a big liability, any more than that and it forces other defensemen to play too many minutes and destabilizes the 3rd pair.

I wouldn't be surprised if part of the problem is that Sather is very old school when it comes to concussions. And I suspect that Bell was attractive because of the offensive he showed that one year he played in the NHL with Ottawa. But, Bell turns out not to be ready for prime time and the search goes on.
