Phaneuf would be just what the Rangers need, Kreider, Thomas, and a 1st should get it done.

Knowing what is known of concussions and their long term effects, I'd say you have to hope for the best and plan for the worst.
Staal could be fine a few weeks down the road and be a Ranger for 12 more years. On the other hand things could turn out differently. The Org. has to give itself as many options as possible.
Komi is crap and Wolski is sadly one of our few potentially productve LW'ers.

Komisarek has a much longer deal and Wolski is slotted to play on the top-line for the Rangers. It's not really similar situations.

We'll have to see how it plays out.
Maybe Tortorella is pushing for a veteran D in Komisarek to help stabalize your blueline with the uncertainty of Staal. I know they are familiar with each other from the US Teams Torts has been involved with.
You can't take back 4.5 without including some Cap Space either so if not Komisarek for Wolski than maybe Gunner for someone else. Leafs won't trade Franson though....he's only the 7th D while they work out a deal to move a body.
Trust us, there is no way Tort's wan't Komiserek on his team.
Anyways, I can't see us signing a free agent who is just gonna sit when Staal comes back. These guys are going to be looking for a bit of stability and a spot on the lineup. I'm tired of scouring the waiver wire for guys. Not the thing that is going to take us to the next level.
So Rangers have 5 D they are good with playing with Staal out , if Bell and Bickely clear which they will they could stay for the time being but who is on waivers they could target?
Even with that glut of young talent in LA on defense, Martinez is one of their better young players and I'm not sure they part with him for anything short of a good payment back.
