NHL.com might have come up with the worst-case scenario for the Wild. No Central Division, no Winnipeg, still stuck with everyone in a different time zone and no geographic or historical rivalries.

Quote:
If the Canucks kept their current spot in the Northwest, the Jets might be moved into the Central in a straight swap (with the Wings or Predators filling the vacancy in the Southeast). The reason for that is simple: I don't believe the League sees any sense in having a division consisting of four Canadian-based clubs and only one American-based team. I think that would be a hard sell to the Avs or Wild -- the U.S. teams that would be faced with that option.

Sounds to me like Detroit is going out East and C-Bus will stay in the West. I have to think the 4-division system is going to be implemented:

West - ANA, CGY, EDM, LAK, PHX, SJS, VAN
Central - CBJ, CHI, COL, DAL, MIN, NSH, STL, WPG,
Northeast - BOS, BUF, MTL, NJD, NYI, NYR, OTT, TOR
Southeast - CAR, DET, FLA, PHI, PIT, TBL, WAS

I'm guessing DET goes with the SE teams to try and increase their ticket sales, since the NE teams do well already. And they don't want to split up the NY teams.

I want a 4 division alignment with us in the Central.

I suppose I can live with the wild remaining in the NW if Vancouver leaves and the Jets join. At least then we get one regional rival.

But still, bleh.

Just bleh.

Detroit would hate playing in the SE, but after all, this realignment makes a lot of sense.

I dont think they'll complain too much as long as they're in the east. What they want is for their away games to be more in their time zone than they are now. Currently Detroit is one of two teams along with CBJ that are in the eastern time zone. That means the only time an away game starts at the same time as a home game is when they play at CBJ or an Eastern Conference opponent.

The Wild should be in the central with a 4 division setup. The west or whatever the division would be called would cover a lot of territory though.

I fully expect the Wild to get the short end of the stick on whatever they decide to do. Just seems inevitable.

DET would play in the SE and love it. They get to play all Eastern time zone teams and get 4 games per year against Toronto and all the others.

The only way to get a really great schedule is to expand the league to 32 teams. Get all the Eastern time zone teams in one conference and all the others in another conference. You'd have four 8-team divisions (or eight 4-team) and group them by geography and time zone.

Here's a fun fantasy league:

WEST:
Seattle, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix (or Vegas)

CENTRAL:
Dallas, Houston, St Louis, Nashville, Colorado, Winnipeg, Minnesota, Chicago

EAST:
Tampa, Florida, Carolina, Columbus, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Buffalo

NORTH:
Montreal, Toronto, Boston, NY Islanders, NY Rangers, New Jersey, Quebec City, Ottawa

Kouvola, and to be precise, Vekaranjärvi. That place probably has its own micro-climate.

If Texas gets a 2nd team before Minnesota gets one, or even Wisconsin gets one team, I will save up my crap for a month, rig a bomb to it and mail it to Gary Bettman so it can blow up in his face when he opens it.

Houston is the largest US metro without an NHL team. Four times bigger than Milwaukee. Not a guarantee of success, but if you're going to expand in the West, that's the place to do it.

Well then lets hope Duluth experiences a gold rush or whatever the 21st Century equivalent is to get another million people in the state.

Minnesota isn't a large enough market to support a 2nd NHL franchise.

No no I know that. I would never suggest we even deserve another one. I get why they would put an expansion in Texas. It's just my yankee north cold weather bias coming through.

No matter the outcome, I would still like to have both the Jets and the Wild in the same league, helping to form a great geographical rivalry.

IMO you can't move Dallas and give Houston a team. Only the rivarly would speed so much things up for both of them.

I'd sort of shift a few more pieces and keep the same division/conference format.

SE: Nashville, Carolina, Washington, Tampa Bay, Florida
Atlantic: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York (R), New York (I), New Jersey
NE: Boston, Montreal, Buffalo, Toronto, Ottawa
Central: Minnesota, Detroit, Chicago, Columbus, St. Louis
NW: San Jose, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg
SW: Anaheim, LA, Phoenix, Dallas, Colorado

Heres a solution: move the Stars to Houston and rename them. Everybody wins!

Then... Do we go back to being the North Stars?

Like I said, I was only thinking about a PERFECT scenario, where you could have balanced everything. You would bring another team up to Canada (Quebec City) and another team in the West.

Houston and Dallas could coexist if the market is there. It's the same distance roughly as Tampa Bay and Florida.

Houston and Dallas already coexist with every other big pro sport:
- MLB (Astros and Rangers)
- NFL (Texans and Cowboys)
- NBA (Rockets and Mavericks)

I wonder why KC is such a target whenever there are relocation rumors.

Note I'm not advocating or hoping for the above scenario. Only that it would make the most sense if the league moves to 32 teams and nobody else is relocating and they want another team in the West. It might make more sense to look at Quebec City, then a second Toronto team, then maybe Seattle or Portland, and THEN Houston. Who knows.

Obviously. Then we can get all up in arms about Brett Bulmer having the audacity to wear Bill Masterton's #19.
