Hush, you! The Rangers will trade for Martinez - it's that simple.

In all seriousness, I agree. AMart is one of the best kept secrets in the NHL, IMO. Very poised young defenseman.

Bring back voros, IMO. Two weeks with barb and he'll be a good enough skater to play defense for us. He'll be the next beukeboom! Cmon guys!

I don't see it happening. Not as long as Torts is coach anyway.

What kind of game does Gunnarsson play? Is he competent defensively?

How about Franson?

I know next to nothing about these two.

Get me Alec Martinez and I'll do whatever you want me to do Sather. I'll be your indentured servant... We all know it ain't happening. Only realistic trade I see happening is with Toronto. Gunnarson has been speculated on and Franson wants out of Toronto. Pull of Martinez and I'll be your servant for life (as long as Ranger games are included)

He's better defensively than he is offensively. He's solid.

He plays a very cerebral two-way game, has a solid outlet pass, and is a very smart player. Good #4 defenseman.

I'd LOVE to get him in Ranger blue.

Sounds good.

If he's a legitimate top four defenseman, id throw Thomas at them and run.

If he IS a top four defenseman, when Staal returns, our depth would be fantastic. We would have 5 top four defensemen. Staal, Girardi, McDonagh, Sauer, Gunnarsson. Del Zotto could use a smart player as his partner.

I'm hesitant for the Rangers to give up a draft pick in this 2012 draft, it's said to be very deep. The only way I'd trade a 2nd or 1st rounder is for a player who'll likely be part of the core going forward. The Devils are doing a good job stockpiling picks in this draft, as much as I hate to say it, the Devils will probably have a top 5 prospect pool as early as next year.

Gunnarson would be a long term fix. I think we need to all assume marc won't miss too much time (otherwise we have big problems). If that's the case

Staal Girardi
Sauer McDonagh
Del Zotto Eminger/Erixon

Bringing in Gunnarson blocks erixon

pointless

need short term fix. Maybe... ERIXON?

With some more cap space now can we pick up Walker off of waivers from Philthy. Kinda expensive for a bottom pairing dman but I think he would be good especially if people say he looked good in preseason. a 1.7 cap hit through next year might be a bit much but we could always waive him. Thoughts?

This was said in 09 when Tampa signed him
“Matt is the big, physical, intimidating presence that we lacked on the blue line last season,” said :placeLawton upon making the announcement today. “He is a high-character, team-first player and he demonstrated that last season, going right back in a playoff game after suffering an ugly, ugly broken finger. He is just the type of player that we were looking for to fill a specific defensive need.”

Bringing in a long term fix is a problem how?

If he is better then Erixon then he's better then Erixon.

If Erixon deserves a spot, and earns one, they will give him his chance.

That kind of depth is never a bad thing.

When it becomes established, you can move pieces to fill other holes at that point.

The Rangers hope to go far this season. No one knows how long Staal will be out.

Phaneuf makes too much money, hasn't been too good for 2 years and why move the one player who may have line #1 potential?

Just because one person mentions Alec Martinez does not mean he is available.

Good luck trying to convince the Kings to deal one of the best young stud d-men after Doughty. If you are willing to pay the price then sure we can get him, but I guarantee if you take this to the Kings board they will laugh at you/give you something you don't want to hear.

I love Martinez, but it's not as if he's "untouchable". He's 5th on their depth chart, and they have Hickey, Voynov, and Forbort waiting in the wings on defense.

I don't think they want to move him, but it's certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

I wonder if Matt Greene or Rob Scuderi are available and if the kings would be interested at all in Wolski+prospect+pick.

Never said he was untouchable. Martinez is one of their probably one of their top two way defensemen and he already was pretty impressive early on in his career. There may be incentive to move one of them in the future when the log jam actually does develop but right now I don't see them moving someone who will continue to grow and play a big part on their team this year unless it's for a good return (aka probably more than we are willing to pay right now).

I expect him to move up their depth chart pretty quickly this year.

Don't worry, I know that. See below:

Because now is definitely the time to deal from an obvious position of weakness on this team. Hey let's just deal Wolski and then Eric Christensen can play as a top 6 LW'er. Smart.

All you're really doing is moving a band-aid to cover up a hole in your arm and moving that band-aid to your knee. When you move the band-aid the original hole will still be there (aka defense might be a trouble spot right now, but trading from a positional weakness doesn't really make things better).
