Reading some posts that his shoulder is a big issue now, so his faceoff prowess is greatly diminished. Makes more sense now.

Still wouldn't be surprised to see some team claim him. Even if he's not a top faceoff option anymore I'd think he could still be used a great PKer.

It appears Dave Steckel has been traded to the Leafs. 4th in return.

Watch out Lombardi & Connolly. He'll wreck ya.

crosby breathes relief. steckel traded out of the division.
reason for being moved? lou thought the reason he was slow was poor conditioning. now he realizes its just steckel

Those were just rumors. I have an inside source that tells me Steckle was running down a hall at the Devils facility, where he didn't see Lou, and ended up giving him a concussion.

he's an elite faceoff taker. sometimes he has a good stick and good positioning on the PK. sometimes he's just slow and out of position.

dirty dave has never struck me as the sharpest crayon in the box, so maybe he'll take well to wilson's more structured style of coaching. best of luck this year.

He was the #1 forward on one of the worst PKs I've ever seen. He was taken out of that role and we became the 2nd best PK in the league.

He is incredibly slow and has no offensive talent. His success in the circle is the only thing that keeps him in the NHL.

Faceoffs are his only NHL skill. He can't clear the puck on the PK and his lack of speed really hurts his ability to adjust his position. Good wingspan though.

Keep expectations low and you might not hate him.

You will never loose another defensive zone faceoff on the PK. Okay maybe a few, but his knack for winning faceoffs is ridiculous.

Capitals' David Steckel is NHL's best at winning faceoffs

Scouting Report
Assets
Has a very imposing frame. Is versatile enough to play both center and wing. Excels in the face-off dot, can kill penalties and score in the clutch.
Flaws
Mainly because of a lack of skating speed and coordination, he doesn't score a lot at the highest level. Also doesn't use his big body effectively enough.
Career Potential
Defensive forward with good face-off skills.

He is exceptional in the faceoff dot and at best mediocre at penalty killing. That is the complete list of his NHL caliber skills.

I hope this isn't considered cross posting and lead to my banishment, but in the main trade thread had one of the best posts I've ever seen on HF.

Since I would never have seen that otherwise, I appreciate your sharing; ouch.

Not surprised the Devils wanted to move Steckel; surprised Burke traded a pick for Steckel with Betts on waivers unless deal was pretty much complete before that news broke.

If Lou picks up Betts, Burke just looks silly.

Wasn't suggesting Lamoriello will claim Betts; sure looks like that roster slot is going to Sykora, but yes, it would.

Here in Toronto, Burke was saying tonight that he had been pursuing Steckel for 18 months.

18 months or 18 hours, lol

(fwiw, Dreger tweeted something about the trade coming together in the last 18 hours; somewhat obvious giving the deal happened)

And we never traded him to Toronto? Guess the 4th really wouldn't have helped much if that was the standing offer, can't really be too upset.

what he isnt is a NHL player.....the faceoff stat is flawed, but that aside....if he wins the draw there is still a big problem.....he is on the ice....you never want him taking a big draw in the offensive zone, and id rather take my chances on a decent faceoff guy who can play a little bit

Damn good player. Mercilessly crapped on like every other player to have left Washington recently but he showed everyone what he could do in the playoffs against the Rangers and Penguins as a 3rd line centaur.

Consider your faceoff and PK issues a thing of the past.
