Who says he/they have to sit in the press box? Maybe Torts, but that's not necessarily the right decision.

Rather play Erixon and co. and deal with his rookie mistakes than deal with no-talent bums such as Bell, Bickel, Woywitka and even Eminger.

Can this guy at least hold the fort? Not looking for Bobby Orr here.

Never take much stock in bitter ex-fan bases.

I'm not bitter, I'm as much of a Rangers fan as a Stars fan. I watched him for 69 games or w/e last year, watched as Marc Crawford relied on him in a top 4 role. Woywitka is not good.

this is actually good roster management.

We got Bickel and Bell to Hartford through waviers and brought in another body. We just need numbers on D - not looking for anything amazing, just someone to chip in with 10-12 minutes a night for the odd game if any of our guys get an injury for a game or two.

his cap hit is minimal. that's what we need.

note to the worriers - if he was any good at all, his cap hit would be too high. we don't need that right now. we just need a body that's ok enough.

We won't be relying on him in a top 4 role though.

Rangers at team dinner, have not announced who they will send to AHL Whale. Woywitka would only play in weekend games in case of emergency.

The Rangers just need a bottom paring guy for a short time. Can't be that bad.

Looks like Eminger is going to be playing alot more than any of us wanted. I just hope he can step up like he did last season, because he looked atrocious in the preseason.

As for Woywitka, management must have felt he was an upgrade over Bell and Bickel. I certainly hope they're right.

My guess is that this move is more for the development of Erixon than anything else. Past the first 2 games in Stockholm, I'm guessing they send him back down to Hartford so he can adjust to the speed and smaller rink size of North American hockey away from the bright lights (and expectations) of Broadway.

Is Staal's concussion that bad that they needed to pick him up?

Woywitka is a #6/#7 D. Don't expect much more. When Dallas used him in that role,he was a good player for them.

Quote:
When he entered the lineup last season around Thanksgiving, owing to a Mark Fistric injury, it coincided with an extended Dallas run that would go through December and culminate with a share of first place in the Western Conference. I recall the locker room after one morning skate where he was the topic du jour. His plus minus and offensive totals in certain stretches were more than impressive.

He was lauded in the media and it caused Marc Crawford to remark "He's done exactly what you want him to do. He's taken advantage of an opportunity and he's performed very well. That's a great sign from any player, and I definitely think that he has gotten more comfortable playing every game."

Then late January and February happened. His minutes went from 13 or 15 per game to 22+ as injuries necessitated and the quality of his competition rose accordingly. His presence on the second power play unit and Marc Crawford's propensity to use him over a healthy Mark Fistric at times agitated the fan base and neither can be said to be Woywitka's fault.

From February 1st onward he finished with only five points and a -4 rating in a pretty significant role, devaluing the currency he earned in November and December. He was exposed, but it was not a problem singular to him. The injuries and poor record late in the season spawned ugly numbers like that for players up and down the roster.

Woywitka is flying to Stockholm from Montreal. The NYR are still not sure if he will make it to rink on time for morning skate tomorrow.

If torts keeps him as a bottom pairing guy playing a bit less than 15 minutes and he doesn't get stuck against the top line players of other teams he will be fine until another more permanent option can be found.

And Eminger was the worst defenseman in the league when we got him last year, according to the masses.

Woywitka is fine as a depth defenseman.

Well, then....

Seriously, if it were Nashville or Carolina over there, he wouldn't be making the trip. Costs too much money.

Its a fine move.

Its nothing long term, its for hopefully just 8-10 games. Then he will go to HFD and be a solid defenseman for them down there.

In comparison to UFA options, he has at least been through camp and preseason and should be in some form of game shape should his services be needed over the next week. It would also seem that UFA options wouldn't be willing to sign for $650K.

siiiiiigh, well atleast he has more experience than Bell and/or Bickel. I assume those two are gone to the AHL now?

Erixon better still play the next two games

Yeah, not the type I would be looking at really, but he is OK imho at least.

Strong and not without talent. Like I definitely think he is a upgrade over Bell an Bickel.

BUT, like, every year, there are good D's out there in the 30-35 y/o range who are functional in a top 3 role, but not good enough for a team to invest in them so to speak.

Niklas Hävelid is a example from previous years, he seemd to be constantly available and on the move. He was OK everywhere he went, but never got a long term duty.

Looking at our blueline, I much rather this see a -- "stopgap" -- that had some experience. Like Woywitka is what 28 y/o, but has yet to really establish himself in the NHL even!

Again, wouldn't it be nice if we just got someone who could play for sure? I mean, of course we can't find someone who could match up against the top 3 of Philly/Was/Pitt and co. But someone who, without the intanglibles, at least could get the job done...
