What's the problem? Bickel, Bell and Woywitka will all be gone as soon as Staal is back. Erixon should not be AHL-bound in favor of players like Bickel, Bell and Woywitka. He can learn on the fly.
Erixon and MDZ together is SCARY

That the Rangers had to pick him up shows just how bad, the Ranger defense is now and how poorly Sather has managed it....Woywitka is fill in depth for an injured Staal..But the Rangers still need a significant D-man to be a top 6 with or without Staal...Staal-Girarid is fine...but remember that McD-Sauer are 2nd year players that often have to adapt to the other team's adaptions--there will be some hiccups..After that you have nothing but kids that should be still learning (if only to mid season) in the AHL and vets that should be in the AHL for life or, at best, a AHL-NHL shuttle player...Hopefully Sather is still looking for the D-man this team needs

Woywitka isn't as bad as some of you are claiming he is. He is a solid #7 and I'll definitely take him while we wait for Staal

How many teams would be totally fine if their #1 d-man was out?

People claiming the team should have an extra top-4 d-man just lying around are delusional.

A five page thread for a bottom pairing waiver wire pick up? Thank God the season starts tonight and the Rangers have their first game tomorrow.

Do they really expect this poor guy to play tomorrow? After a long 8hrs flight he'll be dead tired.

I got a bad feeling about this. Our blueline is weak, full of inexperienced kids

Maybe Thomas + 2nd '12

Teams know the Rangers position. They won't do them any favors.

It would start w/ something like Kreider and a 2nd 2012...at minimum, Imo. In any case it would be VERY expensive.

Who seriously wants to do that?

To me, it makes sense what they're trying to do.

He's not playing tomorrow. He is flying down tomorrow and will only play on Saturday if there is an emergency. He won't be playing this weekend, Eminger and Erixon are in.

Bickel has never played a NHL game right? So whatever Woywhatever is a better spare option and can be sent down whenever

Woywitka is 6'3 230lbs. Thats good, we need some size on the blueline, and probably a reason he was claimed.

Woywitka is not that good but all in all, i'd compare this to like getting another Eminger. a 6/7 guy who can play NHL minutes.

probably end up with something like...

McD-Girardi
MDZ-Sauer
Woywitka-Eminger

having Sauer anchor MDZ might actually give MDZ a chance to find his game.

Every report indicates that he isn't physical, sadly.

Makes me think Sauer's injury concerns them a little more than we're reading into it, because otherwise why wouldn't we go with:

Girardi, Sauer, McD, MDZ, Erixon, Bell with Bickel, Valentenko, and Parlett on deck until Staal was ready to go? I don't think Woywitka is much better than any of those guys save MAYBE Bickel.

Bell had a solid camp, there's no reason to think he can't be servicable until Staal gets healthy.

How bad was Valentenko's camp that he wasnt kept up/recalled?. I mean he wasn't impressive but he certainly wasn't a detriment out there.

I feel he never got a real look because of the time allotted to Erixon and Mcilrath which I can see. But disregarded for the likes of Brendan Bell, Stu Bickell and Blake Parlett ?

We have a very active board, and he is a brand new Ranger.

As far as I remember Valentenko was horrendous and looked disinterested. The team stated that he did not have a good camp. Pretty much what you don't want to hear.

At least we didn't throw valuable cap space money at McCabe or Mara, both of whom are not top six NHL D at this point.

Woywitka is an emergency stop gap: nothing more or and nothing else. The Rangers have bought themselves time until the Staal situation is clarified over the next few weeks.

In the meantime: our season will rise or fall on our young D.

Here is hoping that Sauer and McD can, at minimum, play at the same level as last year: the MDZ makes some progress and the Erixon's force-feeding yields positive results.

A lot of teams have injury issues right now so we're not alone. I don't think that we will be able to access where this team is until they return from the West Coast.

Sather did the best that he could: he hasn't given away any assets or thrown good money at bad. We're in a holding pattern.

Valentenko injured himself during camp. The last game he played, he pushed himself and played injured. He later admitted it was a mistake and that he would work hard in Connecticut to earn a call back later in the season like MZA and many others before him were able to.

I have no problem with a guy from waivers, but as I said, I think a guy like Lashoff or Parent would have been the better option.
