Notre Dame - Hockey East Press Conference (Oct. 5, 2:30PM EST)

Pretty exciting news. Lots of mixed opinions about the move, though.

If there were any remaining doubts about what conference Notre Dame's No. 1-ranked hockey team would be joining for 2013-2014, they can certainly end now.

A press release sent by Notre Dame on behalf of the Hockey East Association announced a news conference on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) at Notre Dame's new Compton Family Ice Arena.

According to the release, Hockey East Commissioner Joe Bertagna, along with Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, Boston University athletic director Mike Lynch and Irish head coach Jeff Jackson will participate.

Speculation all but ended Sunday when the National Collegiate Hockey Conference announced that it would open the 2013-2014 season with the eight teams that already had joined.

Notre Dame was not one of those. And last week, Jackson had said that after the demise of the CCHA, the best options for the Irish would be Hockey East or the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

When reached Tuesday, Jackson declined to comment.

The national shake-up of the collegiate hockey conferences began in April, when the Big Ten announced it would have its own conference in 2013-2014 season, in part because of Penn State fielding a Division I team.

The move took Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and Minnesota and Wisconsin from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The Hockey East Association currently consists of Boston College, Boston University, Maine, Providence, University of Massachusetts, U-Mass-Lowell, New Hampshire, Vermont, Northeastern and Merrimack.

Senior captain Sean Lorenz, a defenseman from Littleton, Colo., noted whichever way Notre Dame goes, it really won't affect him.

"It will be an exciting move, whatever direction they go," he said in a phone interview after Tuesday's practice. "There are strengths in both. Different leagues have different callings.

"I know the University of Notre Dame has worked long and hard at getting the best possible deal. I know the underclassmen will appreciate whatever happens.

"Right now, we are more concerned about what happens in the CCHA and making sure we take care of business this year because we've got a special group, and we don't want people overlooking that."

Why? The athletic directors may appreciate it, but will the players want to travel that much? These are still students you know, Hockey East is all buses.

I'm glad the NCHC didn't wait for the holier than though Irish to make their decision. They wanted to much control over the league and TV rights. See ya later.

I'm also glad it went this way. It opens a very real pathway for RIT into the ECAC with HE now needing a 12th team. RIT fits quite nicely as a high quality academic school with hockey the ONLY game on campus.

Most people think RPI (possibly Quinnipac) is going to be invited to Hockey East with that conference currently at an odd number of teams, and that RIT is among the front runners to replace RPI in the ECAC. They are a better fit academically and competitively in that conference, IMO, and they already have some links with some of the schools - they've played Cornell (who would likely be their travel partner) almost every season in NC games, and RPI and Union are both traveling to the Ritter this season.

Certainly some dominoes to still fall if HE wants to avoid having an odd number of teams, which they've gone on record saying is not a situation they want to be in.
