They're a really young team this year. Lots of core guys have left the team (Charland, Bellavance-Martin, Blanchard, Chicoine and Desilets).

However, got to hand it to them, they really stepped up when it comes to recruiting this year. They got some key players from the QMJHL (Lemieux, Lefrançois) that might play a big role in the next years. Added some size too, which will come handy against the Carletons of this world.

They're still waiting on Karel St-Laurent to show up. He's currently in the AHL with Chicago after attending Vancouver's camp. I think he has a couple of days left to make his decision. From what I've been told, it's AHL or bust for him. Won't settle for an ECHL job.

I've talked to a couple of the new recruits on wednesday. They all said that they didn't know what to expect when it comes to the caliber of university hockey, and they've been surprised, which is a good thing since it means they won't sit on their behind.

With a team so young, I don't see them challenging McGill for OUA East supremacy. Might take a while for all of them to get used to the system.

As listed in the Cornell thread, UOIT beat Michigan 3-2. Big win for the Ridgebacks. Michigan is ranked #9 by USA today.

Pretty impressive win for UOIT. They never seem to have a ton of skill, but they are huge and are annoying to play against. They have given a lot of top OUA teams trouble the past couple years.

Looks like Lakehead was playing without a lot of our best forwards last night. I was wondering why I didn't hear their names. Caria, McDonald, and Carrick were suspended and Beljo did not make the trip. I'm happy that the rest of the guys were able to battle that tough against Michigan Tech. You take those 4 out and we really don't have a whole lot on offense other than Hammond

Why were Caria, McDonald and Carrick suspended? Did they get into fights in exhibition? Chad Lowry of Laurier got into a fight in his first home game with Laurier against Windsor. Those are 4 of Lakehead's top 6 forwards, so that is impressive they did well despite missing those 4. Lakehead's lineup does not have the depth they had a few years ago up front.

Also Western got thumped 9-1 by the Rochester Americans. Former Laurier player Mark Voakes scored for the Americans along with contributions from notable names like Brayden McNabb, Marcus Foligno, Zack Kassian and recently signed Phil Varone.

They were suspended for violating team rules apparently (along with Magill). Carrick and Fillman did get in "fights" vs UQTR though, so I assume that we won't have them next weekend vs McGill. They were pretty cheap fighting majors from what I saw. I may have missed it, but it didn't look like an actual fight happened (it was all going on at once).

The Michigan Tech commentators were loving Fillman last night. He did look good here vs UQTR as well. He's a very a good skater. They were commenting that if he had a few more pounds on him, he may be in "the show".

After 2 Periods

Minnesota-Duluth 3 Lakehead 1

It was 2-1 until late in the 2nd and then Caria got a minor and Carrick got a 5 minute major for a hit to the head. UMD scored on the 5 on 3. Sounds like Carrick went after the guy and hit him from behind or something. He needs to control himself. He had 3 minors before his fighting major in his debut vs UQTR, and now he's tossed again.

A UMD player then boarded Quesnele and the UMD announcers said he should have got a major, but didn't. Apparently it was getting rough just after the period ended as well.

Aca 5 Smu 4 (so)

Acadia gave up a mid-game 3-1 lead and won in the shootout. Three nice goals by Beaton, MacKinnon and Choinard (GWG). Disilvo and Mosher split with Conway going the distance for SMU.

Five D-men. They lost a couple in Brock last weekend. Plus they have a couple of other injuries which impacts their line-up.
