Hollywood, I really do appreciate your rankings and, for the most part, as the season goes along I think they are more accurate than the CIS polls.

Having said the, I see very little value ranking teams based on pre-season results. In most cases, teams are using these games to confirm roster spots, teaching or trying out new offensive/defensive schemes, etc. The same is true of the NCAA teams the CIS teams are playing against. As with the pros, I don't think these results are indicative of the true strength of a team.

True enough. The OHT34 uses the pre-season as a starting point which gradually diminishes in value. The interlocking games do help gauge teams across conferences as well.

UPDATE

I have looked up the scores of all CIS exhibition games from Sunday and Monday and post them here. The games were predominantly CIS-NCAA interlocking games. It seems that some traditional lesser-lights from the CIS are picking up wins, ties, or close losses in games against NCAA teams. I cannot vouch for the relative quality of the NCAA teams.

Sunday, October 2
UPEI 6 vs Moncton 9
Acadia 2 at Quinnipiac (NCAA) 5
New Brunswick 3 at Maine (NCAA) 7
St. Francis Xavier 8 at Northeastern (NCAA) 5
Concordia 5 at RMC 2
Toronto 0 at Ferris State (NCAA) 5
Windsor 1 at Miami-Ohio (NCAA) 4
Carleton 5 at St. Lawrence (NCAA) 2
Ryerson 4 at Sacred Heart (NCAA) 5
Queen’s 2 at Canisius (NCAA) 2
UOIT 4 at Bowling Green (NCAA) 7
Ottawa 2 at Clarkson (NCAA) 4
Western Ontario 0 at Notre Dame (NCAA) 4
Lakehead 1 at Minnesota-Duluth (NCAA) 5
McGill 2 at Colorado College (NCAA) 3
York 4 at Mercyhurst (NCAA) 5
Regina 0 at Bemidji State (NCAA) 7
UBC 0 at Minnesota (NCAA) 3

Monday, October 3
McGill 4 at U.S. Air Force Academy (NCAA) 5
Western Ontario 1 at Michigan State (NCAA) 6
UBC 1 at Minnesota State-Mankato (NCAA) 3

AUS PRE-SEASON UPDATE

The AUS won't get going until next weekend, and yes that is annoying. Here's a snapshot of their final pre-season weekend. Seems to me that UNB can be taken down a peg. I am hoping to spend some time on a final pre-season ranking after I watch the Jets v Habs on Sunday.

Friday, October 7
St. Thomas 1 UPEI 2
New Brunswick 2 Holy Cross (NCAA) 1

Saturday, October 8
St. Francis Xavier vs UPEI
Acadia at Saint Mary’s
St. Thomas vs Moncton
New Brunswick at Massachusetts-Lowell (NCAA)

I don't know if that is your mistake Holly or CIS's but STU beat UPEI 2 to 1. Not the other way around, as shown.

OHT34: October 10, 2011

OFFICIAL HOLLYWOOD TOP 34 ~ #1

Now that all conferences have concluded the pre-season, here is the first OHT34 of the season. I have not included the games against non-CIS teams in this table due to space. The value of pre-season games diminishes as the season progresses. Look for many changes in coming weeks. Each team could probably go up or down at least 5 spots.

You had to go with what you saw. If you hover on the link it says they won.

Looking at the plus side of things, at least we aren't RMC.

Hollywood, are these rankings based on this season's results only, or are you also taking into consideration last season? If it's the former, I can think of no mathematics that would get to a place where Waterloo is ranked lower than Western. They are both 2-0 vs. their confernence and in Waterloo's one pre-season game, they beat Western in OT. Further still, Western played three other pre-season games vs. non-CIS teams and were beaten soundly in all 3.

The link I had for that one said they were tied: http://english.cis-sic.ca/sports/mic...IS_RESULTS.doc

In the rankings, losses to pro or NCAA teams won't hurt you. UOIT and SFX got a slight boost because of their wins against NCAA teams. That boost will dissipate as the season progresses and the teams have a better track record. Waterloo needs more games played. Yes, they are a team to watch since UQTR and Nipissing don't look half bad and they beat them both.

P.S. The same can be said for UBC. They had a win and SOL v Calgary. But Calgary have done reasonably well in 8 games against A level teams (Manitoba twice, Alberta twice, UNB twice, SFX and Acadia). UPEI also have 3 wins against A level teams, tempered by a loss to STU. So lots of teams coud easily be a week away from a promotion.

Last year before nationals:
1) UNB (3-0)
2) Alberta (0-2)
3) SMU - NA
4) Calgary (0-2)
5) St. FX (1-1)
6) Saskatchewan - NA
7) Manitoba - NA
8) McGill (2-1)
9) Western (1-1)
10) Acadia - NA

Shows how tough nationals can be to predict.

This year to start the season:
1) Alberta
2) UNB
3) Manitoba
4) Saskatchewan
5) Acadia
6) St. FX
7) Western Ontario
8) SMU
9) McGill
10) Calgary

All of the teams were present last year in the rankings. I'm a bit hesitant to see 3 of the top 4 from the Canada West given that the conference went 0-4 at nationals last year, and given the past 3 years Nationals have been won by AUS teams (even when UNB got knocked out). We will see how the season plays out. Brock beat #4 Saskatchewan, but then again they did beat SMU once in a split. I'm interested to see St. FX this year. I believe they performed well against the NCAA teams. Given they are the defending champs, I think in my mind UNB is still the favourite. They have lost some firepower, but have the best defence group in the country. So far I am surprised by Calgary's poor play and impressed with Manitoba's ability to turn their "own paper" recruits into solid results.

Hollywood.

Love your passion but no way you can justify the Bears or any other CW School being anything higher than fourth.
I will have at least two AUS Schools and McGill in my top three on my ballot for top ten on Monday.
Do think Alberta is an improved team, but with only one team out of the CW making it to the University Cup...no gaurantee the Golden Bears get a shot at redemption after a poor showing last March.

McGill lost twice to UPEI and beat Lakehead twice by one goal. UPEI then split with STU.

Alberta and Manitoba did better against Calgary than UNB, Acadia, and SFX. SMU split with Brock, beat Guelph and UQTR, and lost twice to Acadia (once in OT). And Sask beat Alberta.

Like Bob, I love your passion, but one difficulty with judging preseason performances are the fluid team rosters. Many stud recruits are away at NHL, AHL or ECHL camps and appear in few of their new CIS team's exhibition games. Teams can be banged up - UNB has yet to dress all of their regular defencemen in the same game, SMU is banged up and Calgary picked up several injuries on their swing through the Maritimes. That's just three examples. Some teams, such as UQTR, appear to approach the preseason as an opportunity to test all of their recruits and walk-ons before they make their final cuts.

Also like Bob, I tend to weigh heavily in the rankings, especially early on, team and conference performance at the previous University Cup. My first vote next week will also probably have two AUS teams and McGill in the top three, because for me this early in the new season last March still matters. This weekend UNB is hosting both StFX and SMU. Someone has to lose those games, but that doesn't mean the losers have to drop out of the top five, or even top three. Well, not the way I see it.

The general outlook on pre-season games may be accurate but it is also irrelevant. Every team is in the same boat. In one pre-season game the Bisons were 3 players short and Regina was one player short. It was the Saturday game of a weekend double-header. Injuires happen. Players can also come and go. But rankings have to be based on what the teams have done.

AUS reality...

As of October 14th there are 8 teams tied for 1st and it goes from there and I predict that it will be a toss up for 1 &2, also 3 &4 then a mad scramble for 5,6.7 & 8; enjoy the season and support your team,it will be much clearer on or about mid march

The big issue from the AUS may be getting accurate scores. Already I had to correct the STU win over UPEI. Now it seems I need to reverse the result of the Oct 1 game between Dal & UPEI. I had seen that reported as a win for Dal, but it should be one for UPEI.

I thought it might be interesting to look at this week's schedule to see which games could prompt large changes in the rankings:

Oct. 12
Concordia UQTR

Oct. 14
Saint Mary's UPEI
St. Thomas Dalhousie
StFX UNB
Moncton Acadia
Windsor McGill
Lakehead Ottawa
Guelph Carleton
Laurier UQTR
Western Ontario Nipissing
York RMC
Waterloo Ryerson
UOIT Queen's
Brock Concordia
UBC Lethbridge
Manitoba Alberta
Saskatchewan Regina

Oct. 15
Laurier Concordia
Windsor McGill
StFX UPEI
Moncton Dalhousie
St. Thomas Acadia
Saint Mary's UNB
Guelph Nipissing
UOIT RMC
Lakehead Ottawa
York Queen's
Western Ontario Toronto
Brock UQTR
Waterloo Carleton
UBC Lethbridge
Manitoba Alberta
Regina Saskatchewan

Of course, any result where a low-rated team beats a high-rated team will cause ratings havoc. But the games likely to cause some ripples are:

- All the AUS games. All teams play two different opponents. For one thing, it is the first time they will be shooting for real. Second, could UPEI be a contender? Third, is Dal that bad? Fourth, are the Squirrels down a peg?

- Manitoba v Saudi Alberta, in Edmontown. The Bisons already won two in Calgary. If they can win even one more in Edmontown they will be right up there in the standings and have only 10 away games left in the season. The Bisons have shown they can shut down MRU, Regina, and Calgary. Can they do it against the Evil Monkeys?

- The Urban Cowboys play away against The Nippers and the Toronto Blahs. The Nippers and Blahs are both in B level now. Yet they weren't always there.

- Waterloo v Carleton may be revealing. Is Waterloo that good? Is Carleton that bad? I heard rumblings from Ontario that Carleton was building up a strong program.

For someone who is usuallly really big on strength of opponents, I find it surprising how little Alberta had to do to get the number 1 position. Their results thus far:

2 wins against Calgary (who have 2 wins in 10 CIS games this year so far)
3 wins against ACAC Alberta college teams
2 wins against Regina (who are consistently in the bottom 3 of the CW)
1 loss against Saskatchewan (a week after Saskatchewan lost to Brock)

If UNB also beat Calgary giving up only 1 goal in 2 games combined, what pushed Alberta over the top? The loss to Saskatchewan, or the wins against the lowest level teams Alberta had to offer? Typically your rankings require wins against quality opponents, we see McGill lose 8-9 spots in your rankings every year because of this.

Hollywood does a great job with this. And has no choice but to work with what is available. Rankings are rankings - and these tend to be of more interest to me than CIS top 10, as the year wears on.

That said I have no doubt that as season wears on that X and UNB will establish themselves as cream of the crop, or amongst cream of crop, in nation. Todays' rankings are meaningless.
