Per Bob McKenzie.

Not sure I particularly understand this one...Stortini was already becoming a fan favorite in a small amount of time, and could at least skate and take a shift. McGrattan is...useless.

Count me in as ecstatic. In my very own biased views I could never stand Stortini with EDM and I hate that we picked him up. Rating the move in hockey terms? Blah. One useless wannabe goon who could take semi regular shifts on the 4th line for a useless goon. Who cares?

Ducks fan here. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by McGrattan. He had a really good camp, which is why the Ducks took him to Europe with them. Unfortunately for McGrattan, Parros already has the job in Anaheim. McGratton really played well in Syracuse last year after the Ducks acquired him. I really wish the Ducks would have kept him, but there really is no room for two enforcers.

Is this simply a move for a better fighter? Seems like a lateral move to me. Not sure if I'd label Stortini a fan favorite yet, though.

you haven't been at the games. in the preseason alone, there was a buzz.

it's a lateral move in that mcgrattan is a better fighter (one of the best, actually) but stortini is a better overall player.

I really, really hate wasting a roster spot on a fighter, either way.

Rumor has it Fish might return this Thursday, regardless when Fish comes back we will have Fisher,SK,Erat,Wilson,Smith,Legwand,O'Reilly,Hornq vist,Halischuck,Smithson,Spaling,Tootoo

That's 12F with Mcgrattan as the extra. I'm not a Stortini fan so I could care less if he gets claimed but he will likely clear and always be there for extra depth when injuries inevitably arise.

Ditto. Stortini could skate, but as an legitimate enforcer he's sub-par. I guess Poile thought if he's going to have somebody to fight he's going to need someone who's good at it. I like the idea of bringing in an enforcer this year. Prior to Storts it was up to either Weber or Tootoo really, to get dirty. With a more physical presence in the lineup it will allow Jordin to play a more offensive role this year.

All apart of Poile's plan for our team this year. He knows best.

You forgot a 21-goal scorer Bergfors.

Also forgot Blake Geoferrion.

Yeah, I think we have enough forwards.

So when Fish comes back I'm guessing the scratches will be Mcgrattan, Blake, and Bergfors.

I hate wasting a spot as well and don't see why we insist on doing it. Poile has never been able to let this one go and we have cycled through a long list of mostly useless fighters. DRW, among other examples, never seem harmed by going without.

Having said that, my top preference would be a purely useless fighter over Stortini who was mediocre at both roles. Our likely option is to use the threat of "taking numbers" in a game (as Trotz likes to say) with the threat of playing the goon in the next meeting with any given team.

There is no rationale for playing him in more than a handful of games. I wouldn't have played Storts in the Blues game- it did no good and Bergfors continued to sit.

with everyone healthy that is here now, there is absolutely no place for him.
if he goes to milwaukee when that happens, fine.

if not..........this is one of my main 'dead horses" to beat with poile and trotz... i hate this philosophy

On most occasions I agree with you. McGrattan will still be useful however as an extra skater when energy and toughness are needed.

I was having a discussion with a friend over the weekend and we figured out that there are, at most, 7 teams in the NHL that have legitimate enforcers. Guys who are on the ice for two things and that is to intimidate and fight. Stortini was never a good fighter, so he was really in purgatory. Not really adding anything.

With the McGrattan add and Fisher's impending return, what should the lines look like?

My guess:

Wilson - Legwand - Smith
Erat - Fisher - Kostitsyn
Tootoo - Spaling - Hornqvist
Smithson - O'Reilly - Halischuk
Bergy-McGrattan

Weber - Suter
Klein - Blum
Laakso - Ekholm
Hillen

Rinne
Lindback

Geoffion sent down.

from what I understand Stortini didn't like to drop the gloves. He wanted to be known for his hockey playing skills rather than his fighting skills.

So in turn, we dropped a guy that we needed to be our enforcer (but didn't want to be one) for an actual one.

I like the move.

Now we have to hope somebody picks Stortini off of the waiver wire. Maybe he'll be an Admiral when they head to Texas in early February.

Geoffrion would be the one sent to Milwaukee. Better to have him playing and working on his offensive skills than sitting on the bench in Nashville.

I'm fine with the move. I don't really understand why we brought Stortini in in the first place. He has always been a lousy fighter and that's the only thing Trotz would ever use him for. Nick Tarnasky 2.0.

If Stortini goes to Milwaukee it's going to be fun when they play Texas with Godard and Gazdic on their roster.

I don't really like enforcers, but I suppose if you wanted one, McGrattan is as tough as they come. He's the all-time single-season PIM leader in the AHL's 75+ year history. And he can throw cinderblocks:

A lateral move, but not a horrific one. He'll see the ice for maybe 10-15 games, throw some punches and get some opposing team fans mad. Let Stortini look after the kids in Milwaukee.

Smithson has taken a lot of draws in the two games so far -- is he basically taking the faceoffs and then shifting to the wing?

I'm trying to find the article I read in the last 2 days, but can't. In it, the coaches talked about tootoo and geoffrion playing a lot on the pk in practice and how lane lambert talked in some kind of symposium here about walking 3-4 pair of pk killers in the forwards so the top lines aren't doing everything. I just don't see them sending geoffrion down. Who knows...lol

I just wonder what in the heck Bergfors did to make himself a scratch.

I don'tknow why everyone is so quick to send geoffrion down. well, I do know, it is his conract. However, late in games it has benn 5 and not 16 playing. It would not surprise me to see Blake stay.
