If he would have pushed Avery like many other players do when another guy hits them then fine. But throwing off the gloves and insinuating that you want to fight is totally different.
No, a player certainly wouldn't be justified with cross checking another player in the face immediately after a cheap hit because the player is just "sticking up for themselves". There is NO logic in that, it's not what happened in the Avery-Iginla situation and I certainly didn't suggest Iginla would have been justified in doing so. The only suggestion I made was that I didn't think Rule 56 was applicable in this situation.

So are you suggesting that Iginla did not take off his gloves for the sole purpose of hitting Avery? If Iginla took off his gloves just to wipe the sweat off of his hands then you are correct. If he took them off so he could hit Avery then it was a clear example of instigating a fight. That is like saying that pointing a gun at someone is not a crime as long as you don't pull the trigger.

Nope, Iginla clearly took off his gloves and I'm pretty sure it was to hit Avery if he could have gotten through Norstrom (I think it was Matty)...I certainly don't think that necessarily means Iginla was instigating anything. I think Avery might have done a little instigating with the hit to be honest? I think that's what the hit was all about.

I don't know where you came up with the pointing the gun at someone analogy, I certainly didn't suggest that...

Well then in a way anytime a guy checks another guy he is instigating a fight, right? Nobody here is saying what Avery did was right. He was assessed a 2 minute penalty for his hit......and rightly so. But it is still no justification for throwing down ones gloves for the sole purpose of punching someone.

I was just suggesting that when somebody points a gun at you they probably have the intention to use it. If a hockey player takes off his gloves he probably has the intention to hit somebody. Neither one is justified.

No, any time a guy checks another guy does not constitute instigating IMO. Hitting a player from behind after the whistle is different from a player delivering a legal check during the normal course of play. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE.

I think Iginla popping Avery would have been justified...
