Update from practice with possible Fisher news tossed in (Cooper):
* Forward Martin Erat is not skating. Yesterday, Coach Barry Trotz said this “… if (Erat) doesn’t practice (today), then I would say that he will miss the home opener.” We’ll see what Trotz says after practice. The home opener is Thursday night against Phoenix.
* In what could be better news for the Predators, forward Mike Fisher (shoulder) is practicing on a line with Jerred Smithson and Blake Geoffrion. It could just be a numbers thing, but we’ll ask Fisher about his status following practice.
I'll await more info before I get too worried about Horny. Day-to-day probably means he just tweaked something and doesn't want to further injure it, but if it was Dr. Trotz who reported it then who knows?
Erat worries me a bit. I thought it was his back, and maybe it is. They are calling it "upper body" which could be anything from a stiff neck to a tooth ache to a severe concussion. If Trotz comes out and says that Erat will probably miss a couple of weeks it means he is dead and they are out looking for a look-a-like.
Good thing we got a top six forward to replace Erat, Fisher, and Horny.
Look, I know some people are going to say yeah we did it is bergfors and smith. Reality is spaling/orielly are not top six forwards and don't count.
I don't understand why we didn't try to target someone who could play top six. Boggles my mind. Wish Erat didn't have a NMC so we could trade him like we did lombardi if he is going to be out for a long time.
Joe, you know I respect your opinion even if I disagree with it, but do we really have to turn another thread into this debate?
Notice I didn't say Franson or Poile was wrong to make that deal. I am simply saying this exactly the kind of problem I was afraid of. Any injury to our top six (fish, horny, SK, leggy, erat, wilson) and suddenly we are serious trouble. Now Horny is day to day, Erat is out for the foreseeable future, and with Fisher who knows. Yes Smith has been an unbelievable addition, but this is the kind of poor planning I was afraid of. Spaling is NOT a top six. And if Tortz isn't ready to trust Bergfors he might as well not be on our roster. Just saying.
We are 2-0 and I am pretty excited about that. But I am justified in fearing our top six depth with out current players. Depth is great but not if there isn't a lot of quality there.
From what I have seen Smith might argue, but I do agree other than that.
Smith definitely qualifies, but I was referring to those on the roster that could fill in for Erat on the second line. Craig Smith is clearly a first line player right now!
FWIW, I got to meet Craig's family on Saturday night/Sunday morning up in St. Louis. Unbelievably nice, down to earth, people. Went to both Columbus and St. Louis and we were trying to convince them to come down for tomorrow night's game. The entire family came over to our table (upon being introduced) and went around thanking us for our support and taking the time to shake each of our hands (~15 of us), introduce themselves, and talk. Just a great memory from the trip!
We keep falling into this depth chart trap that THIS guy must play, and THIS guy must sit. When the fact is that it should be a switch of roles. Bergfors is the first offensive replacement whereas halischuk/geoffrion/Bourque are the grinder/defensive call ups
Placed on IR according to Forechecker today ... that means either he's out until Saturday OR LONGER ... Yeah, we don't need to get bigger stronger & faster in our forward corps ... keep your damn head up Erat
