RT @billmeltzer: When Mario played 1st game after cancer treatments, Flyers fans gave him standing ovation. Funny how that story doesn't get constantly told.

I was just about to post that. There's a huge difference between booing the player and the message. Cue around 9:45.

And nobody mentions how there actually were fans at a game to see a 1-13 team.

And the Eagles won the game, costing them the #1 pick in the draft (OJ Simpson).

And it happened in 1968.

I wasn't born for another 12 years.

Actually, articles like this are the reason why the negative stereotype around Philly fans continues to be perpetuated. The uninformed reader with no real info or context around Philly fans and these "incidents" begins to form a negative perception because, quite frankly, that's all they are exposed to!

The Flyers Wives Carnival is an incredible charity event that other teams are now trying to mimic but it NEVER gets mentioned outside of Philly. The media thrives on anti-Philly fans info and even skews the article titles to promote negativity. EVERYONE knows that they were booing Crosby but the media STILL positions this as an anti Philly fans piece while using it to bring up Santa & cheering injured players, etc, etc.. There is never any additional context around those incidents and there never will be because the lazy media loves to continue referencing those incidents.

If I was some random hockey fan outside of the Philly market with no frame of reference around the Philly fan base, how could I ever develop a positive attitude towards the fan base in Philly when the media floods me with negativity that's skewed and has no supporting context? We're in a no-win position as Philly fans and the media will never stop distorting what they write to continue their anti-Philly fans agenda...

I actually remember this. Again you can't fault the entire fanbase but WOW. What a psycho.

On a side note - but related...

It really irks me how much emphasis is put on head hits - and the poster boy Crosby and Mario sit around and gripe about it meanwhile they have the number 1 offender on their team. How can they both be so anti-head shot and have Cooke?

And what about them gooning it up last night? Aaron Asham knocking a guy out then taunting him...

Why are they not the bad guys?

Maybe it's because our uniforms elicit the feeling of a prison jumpsuit with the bright orange?

So if they would have gotten the Juice the Eagles would be able to say they had two killers on their team (one of dogs, the other--though not convicted as such--of humans).

lol u r funny. teeeheee that made me giggle.

Yeah i was saying "worst article ever" because it's pretty obvious why people were booing. They weren't booing cancer. You show a pic of crosby in that arena and one thing happens: booing. It could have been a video of him saving babies from a burning building and bros would blatantly & blindly boo that boring bore.

The world loves to hate philly. They don't understand why we threw snowballs at Santa (not that I was alive).

And literally every fan base cheers when they see the other team take a huge hit in pretty much every sport.

I was at the game. Don't even remember the PSA. But anytime you put Crybaby and the guy who took the cup from us on our screen, we'll boo.

Get over it world.

If you lived in Philly. If you grew up supporting Philly teams. If you had an ounce of the passion we have for our teams. You'd understand why we are the way we are.

The world will never understand. Love us. hate us. No matter what we do, we'll always be the bully. The moron. The classes. Nevermind that a baseball coach was nearly (or was) paralyzed in another city because a couple of fans beat him up (I think it was Chicago last year?). Nevermind a Washington fan threw a beer bottle at Jeff Carters head (without a helmet).

Boo Crosby. Boo Cancer. Bring it World. We're Philly. We've lost the most baseball games. never won a super bowl. and we beat the living snot out of your team before we no look pass and bury the biscuit behind your lost and confused netminder to bring the cup home.

give us your worst. We can take it.

No clue how that's related, but there was 10x more talk last night about Asham's incident than there was about our overblown incident with the cancer PSA. Many of the writers on twitter are still discussing it.

Asham apologized for the incident, and said it was stupid. He's far from a goon.

the video starts out like this: "hi! i'm sidney crosby!"

do you expect flyers fans not to boo that on opening night?
