Funny how fast things change these days
... a few weeks ago everybody was like "we are not going anywhere this season...may not even make the playoffs..."

right. so we aren't a top 5 option out of the east? hop off.
What is with the Internet and the proliferation of Straw Man arguments? OrangeCrush DID NOT SAY (or imply) that this game would determine who wins the Richards trade or how this season develops. He said that a Flyers loss could give critics of the trade and detractors of the organization another round of ammo (no matter how dubious it may be), and he would prefer that not to happen. Simple.
Here we go with the straw man BS again. LOL
The poster replying didn't say that OrangeCrush DID SAY (or imply) that this game would determine who wins the Richards trade or how the season develops. All he said was that we won't know the outcome of the trade for a number of years.

Probably not in most people's eyes. Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh, Buffalo are all likely better then us. Although I can see Boston slipping due to a SC hangover. Tampa and the Rangers are arguably better as well.
You are right winning is all that matters, but this would be a huge win early and noone can deny that.
Yeah I'm going to go ahead and deny that.
Simmonds wants to play well against the team that traded them - other than that - It's 2 points to go and get against a good western conference team. The Kings are good - and that's about it. The games against Boston and Vancouver were bigger than this for obvious reasons - regardless of who plays for the Kings now.
These are the teams I think are better than the Flyers.
Tampa
Rangers
These are the teams I think are in the same tier as the Flyers.
So yeah, we might be a top5 team in the East.
There's also a difference between being a cup-contender and being a top5 team in the conference.
You look at the Western Conference and I see San Jose, LA, Chicago and Vancouver as better teams than the Flyers. And you can never count out Detroit.
I don't buy Buffalo one little bit. They still don't have any balls with guys like Roy and Kaleta - and Myers is good but he's no Pronger and never will be. In spite of what all those morons in NY state will tell you. Tampa is solid but the Rangers??? Come on - Richards helps them but what has that guy ever proven? Their D sucks too...

Roy? He's their #1 center, what has he to do with "balls"?
The Sabres pretty muched pushed us around last season, they added Leino, Regehr (who's still a tough SOB) and Erhoff and also will have Roy back at 100% health.

Yeah right, his Conn Smythe Trophy was a birthday present.
Ranger's defense is horrendous. Yea they have one of the best goalies in the league, but if you watched their defensive play the first two games, it was terrible.
Buffalo and Boston are good, but easily beatable. On paper stuff never works and it didnt work last season. Anyone who would have said Boston would win the cup last season are bs'ing themselves.
I'm not from philadelphia so I don't really know the mood in philadelphia right now, but do you guys think richards will be booed or will he gets an ovation?
If I had to guess, I'd say Bryzgalov plays tonight considering the team is on a winning streak. If Laviolette chooses Bobrovsky this early in the season, it would likelier be against Ottawa (the next opponent). Just an assumption..
Richards will only get boo'ed by Eagles and Phillies fans who want to find something to get pissed off about with the Flyers and try to drag us down.
Richards was the captain of a team who went to the Finals, and every other captain who has done that in this town has been rather revered outside of Lindros, and even then he's largely been forgiven for whatever transgressions. At the very least, it shouldn't be any different than Gagne last year, a polite clap or cheers out of appreciation, and then it is game time and you are the enemy.
People act all pissed off at Richards, but until January of this year he was the most popular player on the team, and arguably the most popular athlete in Philadelphia considering each core fanbase, and he didn't pull a power play to get himself out of town like Lindros did, and even showed up on the radio the day after he got traded.
GAGNE: “I think he’s doing better than I did last year. I did struggle, on my side, last year, but with Mike, he seems to be doing pretty good now. He’s playing really well for us right now. We’ve got a great bunch of guys who help to make things a little easier. At the same time, he’s coming to a team where he knows a lot of people and coaching staff and stuff like that, so he’s doing really well right now.’’
Question: What do you think the fan reaction will be like?
GAGNE: “I think the fans are going to be great with Mike. He was here for six, seven years. I think Flyers fans are always pretty good with players that have been drafted by the Flyers from day one. He won a Calder Cup with the Phantoms and then, after that, played with the Flyers and played his best every night. Then he was a captain for the Flyers, which is always something special for any player. So I think the fans are going to be really good with Mike and I think he’s looking forward to tomorrow.’’

That's what I thought last year. Damn them and their three Game 7 wins.
