hands... oh my lord my hands

Hey guys,

I have a question for you... do some nights your hands feel more like stone than others?

My game last night felt like that, until the end where for some reason I seemed to have given up, and let my body do its thing...

jebus, its like when you think ahead about a play, your body doesn't do what you think you should

anyways, pass recieving at full tilt with a hard pass has probably always been the worst part of my game... what have you guys done to remediate this?

before a game (or any time you're on the ice), take some time to.... pass and receive passes

Yep - repetition is the way to bridge the gap between your instinctive abilities and your intentional abilities, if that makes sense.

Why on earth would you play drunk? If you do anything stupid out there when you're under the influence, you're ****ed and the rink is ****ed for letting you play like that.

Watch that old Mighty Ducks movie... Bombay has them practicing passing with eggs.. You cradle the pass you do not hit it

Yesterday it was like Medusa stared at me and it only affected my hands. Couldn't even put in tap ins.

As for the OP, stickhandling a golfball for a bit seems to help my hands "soften up". Not saying it would work for everyone but finessing the bouncey little SOB does a pretty good job in my experience.

All too often!
Though for me its more shooting than stickhandling or passing, one session I'll be able to place my shots with semi decent accuracy (for my level) and at least be able to get it over the pads when needed but then some sessions I won't be able to get the puck off the ice and it'll keep flipping up on me or rolling off the end of my stick. Whenever this happens I just stick to Deke--> 5 hole, its a bit harder to mess that up!

Weird. I never found golf balls to be that bouncy off the blade.

Yeah usually if I'm hungover or feeling like crap (or generally out of shape) my head and hands suck.

Two ideas for you:

Short-term - get a regular routine happening which can promote consistency. Check out this book and this book.

Long-term - improve your hands in general and your "bad days" will be better. Go through these drills with a variety of balls, including Smart Hockey, wood, golf, and weighted.

well yesterday at my game, I got there early...

taped up my sticks twice (well just an OCD routine)
only made left turns when walking into the rink
brought my ipod and sounddock and left "you're the best" from the Karate Kid on full bore on repeat for about 40 minutes
Brought a soccer ball and kicked it around with the team to loosen up
Hit up the statationary bike to get a quick pump
Drank G2 pre-game

lol...
Actualy... just arrived to my late night game, and my hands started to work again

I just spent a couple more minutes stick handling and passing I felt great and had a "stellar" game lol

Yeah I'm the same way, I just show up and get out there. Absolutely no superstitions or routines. I usually play fairly well unless like I said I ate or drank too much in the past 24 hours.
