Yeah that thread is hilarious. Tons of people hated that deal but the funny ones are the guys saying "this deal is a good one, just think how good Gomez will look with Gaborik on his wing!"

The best is Page 9 when the Habs fans become aware that McDonagh was part of the deal.

Yeah, that trade made zero sense for Montreal

In hindsight, we basically got McDonagh straight up for Gomez. Higgins was godawful and Valentenko will most likely never play a game here

it's funny. now i would have traded Gomez, Higgins, a prospect and a 2nd for McD alone. silly how things work out, but Sather David Blained that one for sure.

It's funny to see it slowly turn to rationalizing giving up McDonagh, and of course we know by the end of the year the Habs made the playoffs and Rangers didn't so the Habs became immediate winners of the trade...and then here we are with Gomez being one of the most hated Habs and McDonagh playing great hockey.

I guess you can say the Habs won the trade for the first year but looking past that, they could really use the cap space and a defenseman like McDonagh

Forgot about that. I don't think Gaborik would have ended up in Montreal anyway

Couldn't we just send Redden down at that point if Sather really wanted Gaborik? Not sure if he would have done it that early, but it was an option

If Gomez was actually putting up 70 points like he has a few times in his career then the trade wouldn't have been that bad. But the fact that he had by far the worst season of his career last year and is off to a slow start again this season puts it the whole thing increasingly back in our favor

Nope. His cap hit comes back on our books each summer. For example, the cap space we had left to sign Richards, was with Redden on our books. Redden can't be sent back down until training camp starts. So essentially, we traded Gomez for McDonagh and were able to sign Gaborik because of it.

I see. That's what I figured at first, thanks

To be honest though, I kind of wished we had gotten Cammaleri instead. He's not as sexy of a player, but he would have cost us 1.5 million less and he really steps it up in big games. Gaborik is a little too easy to shut down

Let's also not forget that Higgins essentially became Brandon Prust. So, Gomez and Tom Pyatt, (a player this organization has a plethora of) for McDonagh, Prust and the cap space to sign Gaborik. I remain pleased with the deal.

Not only did Higgins become Prust (which is nice and all), he got rid of Ales Kotalik.

Some Montreal fans are still trying to justify the trade because they made it to the ECF two seasons ago. And they are still buying into the myth that Gionta and Cammy signed in Montreal solely because of Gomez, clearly money had nothing to do with it. Delusional.

Would anyone mind posting Sting's posts from that thread? It's a pretty big thread which I did not take part in, so I have no recollection of posts.

You know I think McDonagh was actually trying to score on that Gaborik assist, but the puck slid off his stick and right to Gaborik, instead of him being able to stuff it in the net

Sting's first response:

Quote:
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH HAPPY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OH HAPPY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Scott Gomez...**** you! Couldn't have happened to a more annoying group of fans!

Oh man, I think I can't breathe. This is too good to be true!
His 2nd response after learning of McD:

Quote:
WHAT????????????? WE GOT McDONAGH AND VALENTENKO? ARE YOU ******** ME? THIS CAN'T BE REAL! DID GAINEY HAVE A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN???
Priceless.

Nope. Definitely a pass. If you look really closely at the third replay on this video:

you can clearly see he puts no effort into the "shot" you speak of. He just very gently slid it across. He lifted his stick off the ice too. Definitely not a shot. Go to 0:49 in the video and watch the replay.
