I personally think either Rinaldo or Zolnierczyk should have stayed with the big club and Shelley have been the one to be waived. I realize that Shelley is a veteran, a heavyweight and a good locker room and practice presence. However, as stated many times before, I think he makes too much on the cap for a player of his role, especially considering the team's cap problems. Same thing goes for Matt Walker, who did not play well in his first game of the season last night while the much more affordable Andreas Lilja was generally effective as the sixth defenseman in his first four games.
However, this is simply not rational. Only because Holmgren won't do it. With the heavyweights in our division (McIntyre, Rupp, Boulton, whoever is on the Islanders), plus some other teams' fighters: Shawn Thornton, Colton Orr, Matt Carkner, etc. that's just not an option for the organization that prides itself on having the biggest, baddest guy in the yard.

Agree.
I just don't like the price tag of our tougher guys(Walker, Shelley)
I know it's only Rinaldo and Zolnierczyk that were sent down, but I'm wondering if maybe the Flyers management felt too uncomfortable with so many first year players in the lineup. I know about the financial issues and salary cap issues, but I still wonder if maybe they felt the team was too young and wanted some veterans in here to help some of the younger players when times get tough.
I'm not defending the moves made today because I really do think and believe that Rinaldo and Zolnierczyk offer so much more than Shelly does. I still think why aren't they waiving Matt Walker and getting his salary out of there as well. Sometimes the moves this franchise makes really leave you scratching your head.

I think they really want to make Walker the 6th D-man. All we heard was how great of a camp he had and how healthy he was. Honestly. If Walker plays a simple game i wouldn't mind. He doesn't have to go out and put numbers. As long as he is solid in his own zone and protects his teammates then his price tag is worth it.

I want the defender who can actually play defense over the defender who can just fight.
Oh god, we don't have an enforcer to fight another enforcer!
That said, it's not an overly physical team, but it's definitely not soft.
They just don't have that player that will push back if we get pushed. I don't want Wayne Simmonds wasting his time having to be that guy who steps up to people. He is really the only one with some snarl besides Pronger and we all know Pronger isn't going to waste his time.

No **** if Walker does everything right he would be good. This can be said for his whole career and for everyone's career... But guess what? He hasnt done this...ever. His play has always been like this.
Now if your telling me you beleive a 31 yr old is going to change his play, after being in and out of the league since 2002, then... I dont know what to say.

I'd rather just have guys who are better at hockey than guys who will fight back.

I never said he had to do everything right. Nobody on the ice will do everything right. We all make mistakes. Just make the simple pass out the zone. Play decent positionally and stick up for your teammates would be good. Not bad for a 6th defenseman.
I don't see why a lot of you are up in arms about having an enforcer on the roster? Obviously Shelley sucks and his contract is ridiculous, but Rinaldo, while not really a heavyweight, is half the price and is a better player than Shelley IMO. Do you really think 8 minutes of Nodl (or any other 4th line player that would be playing instead of Rinaldo) compared to 5 minutes of Rinaldo is going to be the difference for this (or any) team?

Nodl is a bad example because he actually plays on the PK.
Nodl>Rinaldo.
People sometimes under appreciate how solid Nodl is on the PK.
